With just a few days to wait until the first of us will receive their Jolla Phone 2, I wanted to bring back some memories about the glorious era when Nokia still existed, had top-notch true Linux-powered devices in their portfolio and apparently a big bunch of creative heads in their promotion department, who were allowed to be unconventional, nerdy and sometimes also a bit weird.
The videos I’ve linked here came from a quick and dirty search on Youtube. If you know other such videos or find versions with better quality, feel free to post them in this thread yourself.
Let’s start with the Nokia N900

Next, the Nokia N9

A very cool sequence of slow motion videos to introduce the edge-swipe gestures that also make up Sailfish OS
And another favourite of mine: The Nokia N9 Seconds campaign
6 videoclips. Each one having a duration of only 9 seconds, hence called “the world’s quickest ads“. And each one packed with way more information than one might expect at first glance.
Because these 6 clips were the core part of the so-called N9 Seconds Challenge. Eagle-eyed viewers could find several hidden codes inside the videos, which they could enter on a specific Nokia website to solve the challenge. Some codes required the viewers to just look closely, others required them to combine clues in the videos with additional clues given to them through Tweets and separate websites, and again others required some nerdy number-crunching. Ahhh, what golden times of pure creativity we had back then.
Until Microsoft came. Well, at least they saved the article from the Nokia blog which contained the complete solution of the N9 Seconds Challenge from disappearing:
However, they unfortunately forgot to also save the pictures in this blog article properly. They still point to the now defunct Nokia blog. But since all of them were merely a collection of screenshots taken from the 6 videos IIRC, you can also skim through the clips frame by frame yourself to find the relevant clues.
So, what will Jolla come up with for their Jolla Phone 2?
Yes, I know I skipped the Jolla Phone 1. Just add its promotion videos to this thread on your behalf.
The only thing that stops an alternative is a quality product. It wont come in a day but your execution has to be flawless. Something that in the case of jolla -the only real alternative os- isnt happening.
The SW needs work and the HW needs 10 time the work of the SW.
I remember the huge push to get developers on board, with so many N950s handed out to community members to create Harmattan apps and also to provide a platform for Meego too.
Sadly the writing was already on the wall once MS got involved. I wish Nokia had committed to maemo much earlier. Reading the history, they had OS 2005 on the tablet devices, and it seemed like they reacted to the iPhone when maybe they should’ve gone down that road from the off.
