Nextcloud contacts sync doesn't work - solved

Hi,

I’ve just received my Jolla Phone, and I’m in the process of setting up the things I need to use it daily. Things have changed since the halcyon N770 and N800 days :winking_face_with_tongue:

I have a private mail-server with Mail-in-a-box, which includes a Nextcloud instance for contacts and calenders. On that server, I have separate profiles for work and private, both configured as NC accounts in SailfishOS, with contact sync enabled.

Yet, the People app stubbornly remains empty.

If I create a new contact in the People app, the only choice available is to store it to the phone. Clearly, the People app doesn’t see the two NC accounts as viable targets for storing contacts.

The NC accounts have two-way sync enabled, a sync schedule set, and services Contacts, Calenders and Notifications enabled, everything else disabled.

Calenders sync correctly, and instantaneously.

There’s nothing whatsoever in my NC logs, so no errors on the server side.

I’ve even rebooted the phone

We had another thread about that… (so search recommended). Nevertheless there seem do be some problems

I changed my settings some time ago, worked out of the box with my Jolla Phone, while Xperia 10 III took days until it was synced. It may also be related to the connection itself, especially if it’s a https connection (if your hosting your nextcloud at home).

The mail server is a vps in a data centre.

Calendars sync correctly from the same instance in the same server to the same phone, so I’ll rule out connectivity issues.

All the other threads I’ve found have some functionality. I have none.

Not only doesn’t it sync, it won’t even let me save a new contact to an NC account, only to the phone.

The People doesn’t even see the accounts.

I had those issues too and ended up exporting the contacts as .vcf and importing them into Jolla in a single batch. I imported them also into Nextcloud and at the same time a lot of contacts with only emails ended up in “Recent contacts” list, which was the only list that synced from NC and they could not be removed from the phone. But I got the contacts I needed from the manual export and forgot about it.

The repo is in Github if you want to investigate it:

/sailfishos/sailfish-account-nextcloud/

(for some reason I can’t post a link to that host, but it’s the official repo nevertheless)

I found the solution.

In Settings | Accounts | account | Pulley-menu | Advanced Settings

the path of the Address book NC end-point wasn’t set, on any of the two accounts.

From the NC Contacts interface, under Contact Settings, I copied the “iOS/MacOS Caldav address”, and pasted it into the SFOS settings.

Synced, and it worked.

Conclusion: for some reason SFOS hadn’t populated this field at account creation or when contacts sync was enabled.

A non-technical user would never have figured this out, so I’d say there’s a bug somewhere.
