Next gen Jolla Phone

Funny you would think of it like that…

The luminous blue is probably less expensive.

Increasing funtionality increases the need for screen size, ram and battery. A key part of the two main OS’s sales strategy is to increase the time spent using the device, engagement, and therefore reliance. One result is the length of time needed to access functions, viz IOS multiple steps to alter permissions for each app. Which of course increases the data available to the OS’s. And for AI data training and more. Which cannot be turned off. Even removing the sim leaves BLE which in the case of Apple keeps working for 9 months after the battery shows flat . One delight of Sailfish which achieves remarkable usuability whilst maintaining is quick and easy functioning. A pocket sized device with essential functions to carry around used in conjuction with a desktop or laptop at base achieves security and privacy. I sail, go sport flying and ride motorcycles. It is not practical to carry a large phone and nor sensible or necessary one with comprehensive work related function. To take a break and rinse the brain does much to enhance civilisation

For those who wonder…
The Nokia Aeon concept phone from 2006 used a fuelcell to achieve several months between “charges”.

You wrote ‘black glass front,’ and I misunderstood it as ‘back glass"’ and doesn’t recognize your “removable plastic back (textured)”, so that was my fault. I apologize to you and have fixed my post!

But anyway, Nokia used transparent plastic bodies and backs for some Lumia smartphones, with the color paint applied inside. This way, if you scratch the body or backside, it doesn’t scrape off the paint, helping to maintain a quality appearance

That would actually be an idea: a polycarbonate display with a thin, replaceable screen protector. Advantages: no more glass breakage and lighter weight. Disadvantages: the screen protector needs to be replaced regularly to maintain the protection of the polycarbonate display.

I just find the Aeon concept an insanely attractive object - hadn’t seen this one before. If only something like that could be realised…

Regarding specs, especially for a small variant I could easily do without a dedicated FM/UKW radio, although I quite like listening to live radio (and at times did an awful lot of this). But if it were necessary to save on space and complexity, that would seem like a small sacrifice, since streaming usually is satisfactory, either through a good browser or AllRadio

A FM radio (with built-in antenna) comes in handy when there is a big blackout. …or when the phone has no coverage. …or when running out of internet data. …or on a sunny day hiking.

Besides… the physical FM/RDS chip is housed in QFN-20 packaging that measures 3×3 mm.

Oh… And I forgot to write that Traffic Message Channel (TMC) functionality would be nice too.

Extra screen protectors is one thing that gives me grey hairs right now. You see, some in-display fingerprint sensors really don’t like them.

I once dreamed of two phones – J2 and J3.

  • The premium phone specs could well be turned into a phone called J2.
  • The mid mini specs, tor the smaller sibling, could well be turned into J3.

I’m still dreaming and probably doing so in vain. But I’ve done what I can and now – like it always was, actually – it is completely out of my hands.

So I take the flu medications and get back under the blanket, the whippet at my feet. I let an audiobook from Youtube play on the C2 next to the bed. The fever is still pretty high but it is slowly getting better. Should have been taking better care of myself these few days, but I really burn for this, for the next Jolla phone or two. I never thought it would happen, to be honest. But now I need to rest and recuperate. I can’t add anything more to the debate at this stage anyway.

So please treat each other well during the discussions, but don’t fear to get the details absolutely right. You can do this better than I ever could, OK?

Good night.

Please VoWIFI ! Phone calls over WLAN are very important in areas with bad network coverage or in foreign countries / on holidays / outside EU.

Yes, that would really be great, very useful function

I have only 1 opinion/request:

Don’t give up on supporting a few existing consumer devices.

If that isn’t an option and I need to buy a (new) Jolla phone anytime in the future, I’d like to keep it affordable, like the C2 currently.

I have watched the development of a few independent devices over the years, and they always lag behind and/or are massively more expensive compared to feature-parity consumer devices. That’s just the nature of the game. Add to that wanting to manufacture nearby - let’s just say I take every “make it bigger/better” opinion with a massive grain of salt.

My Xperia 10vi cries out for SFOS with its 8GB memory and efficient 4nm heart!

And in my basement. And my favorite Polynesian-themed grocery store. But no new hardware is needed – beat you to it, attah  – so I’d like to see that added to existing devices as well.

Mee too! It’s not a hardware thing, all existing SFOS devices do have WLAN. We urgently need the software parts for VoWIFI in SFOS, @Jolla !

RK3576+UFS2.0 > RK3588s+eMMC5.1 ?

Agree, E7 is an excellent hardware factor. I think using all from 3,5 to 5+ “ small display size is a habit.

Resolution, sharpness and eye friendly rendering by the screen tech is decisive. Especially in bright sunlight or low light.

Remember that the E7 was to be the perfect N8 with keyboard were it not for the superior N8 camera that Nokia in it’s arrogant wisdom of never creating “one device to rule them all” and charging the price for that had stripped out of the N8 so it could compete itself to death.

For Jolla both keyboard and excellent camera may be out of reach unless they find a hardware partner in a country with uplifting economy and customer base looking to divert from monopolist OS makers that is ready to invest in the hardware part.

I just love this trolling done by Jolla in this thread

Remembers me of the old Windows Phone days, when Microsoft would just make fun of users by telling them to post their requests on the “user voice” forum and vote for them, only to completely ignore the requests, especially the top 2 requests which had huge numbers of votes, absolutely dwarfing any other request on that joke forum.

Well played, Jolla, well played.

Days later and with less of a fever I noticed this…

5G SoC with support for eMMC storage…

Huawei – None
Mediatek – None
Qualcomm – None
Samsung – None
Unisoc – T9100, T8300, T8200, T8100

Liberux uses a Rockchip 3588s with a separate Qualcomm X62 modem.
