New binaries / blobs for Xperia V and IV : What is happening actually?

Maybe it’s a good idea to license the Android blobs, so a Sailfish OS license would have an additional cost but include the original available blobs. The downside is the closed-source issue: you can’t know whether there is tracking inside the communication drivers.

This exact problem was explained a long time ago by the project leader of CalyxOS.
When he was asked about the privacy level of the CalyxOS, he replied that everything (especially google related) was stripped down, but he can’t promise anything about the proprietary drivers, which are closed source, leaving a “hint” that this is most possibly a privacy issue that you have to live with…

You are wasting your time if you expect any useful explanations on these forums about anything that Jolla did not already communicate themselves.

All answers on these forums are just like the one you received. Nobody knows anything, but they all claim Jolla is working hard to revolutionize the universe, but the evil enemies (like Sony) are always to blame because they keep sabotaging Jolla somehow.

Have you ever read the meeting minutes for the periodic IRC meetings?
I read them from time to time, especially if I see forum comments saying there is information in the meeting minutes.
There is never any new or useful information.

Even for the latest meeting, a guy said the discussion was basically wonderful.
I read the meeting minutes. The wonderful answer from Jolla to that guy’s very clear question about the magical sony blobs was a simple “we have no updates” :joy::joy::joy:
And he still considered that discussion to be awesome or something like that :joy:

Somehow many people on these forums consider a predictable “no updates” answer from Jolla to be a great and informative discussion.

Also, if you mention obvious things like “Jolla is lying that the xperia 10 iv and v are officially supported” you are called a troll and a hater and other things like that

I feel like I’m in The Twilight Zone TV series when reading these forums.
That is one of the main reasons why I visit the forums, to be honest…

I read the question and the answer

At this point, we do not have an update regarding the next downloadable & flashable Sailfish OS image.

like not even concering the 10iv or 10v.

My hunch is that people are bored of actually asking because Jolla will tell us when things work, even without asking.

He’s not wrong, lineage is an android and doesn’t have to worry about bionic->libc translation as sfos does, muh ‘android is linux’, yeah but with a gimped bionic userland, sfos is a proper libc gnu/linux. From what jolla wrote newer blobs moved to newer apis, they are handled by aosp automatically, so the fact few teenagers at lineage can support it is totally expected, libhybris not handling new code is also totally expected, but hey, 20$ for chatgpt subscription and just ask it to add the needed functionality, libhybris is open source, so have at it

Lineage OS for Sony devices is based on proprietary Android blobs. This means that the blobs are extracted directly from device and, if needed, patched or replaced with some similar blob.

Jolla has based its ports on AOSP version of Sony Android (SODP). This one has a different set of blobs and a different team working on it. What makes this version extremely attractive for Jolla is a clear licensing policy by SODP and that allows you to legally build on top of it what you want. For example SFOS. Unfortunately, requirement of having blobs and basing all SFOS on this Android has become rather problematic. It has lots of bugs, small team that works on it when they can. As a result, SODP based Android is rather unstable, lacking features, and driver support. For that reason, already a while ago, Lineage devs switched to stock-Android based approach. That maybe not possible for Jolla due to legal aspects.

Idgi, hadk starts with lineage sources, some enthusiast porters should be able to get a fully functioning X(I)V port working by now then using stock and skipping the SODP???

Whether anyone tried to use LOS as a base. I did, but for Xperia 1IV. … and it works really well!

But story goes as follows. Last fall, I decided to make new port for Xperia 1IV Nagara. As Jolla, I used SODP as a base. For Nagara, this turned out to be a nightmare. I managed to somehow compile it (wasn’t easy as there were constantly some bugs) and got mainly a heating device that couldn’t call, nor do many other expected functions. Basically, useless unless you count out heating function in cold winter.

Now, Nagara, if you look at LOS devices page, doesn’t have official LOS release. Nor it didn’t have unofficial either. So, I ported LOS21 to nagara first. Its still not released as LOS devs want to release LOS22, but it forms a base for SFOS port. We are getting close to release with the current state described at GitHub - sailfishos-sony-nagara/main: Documentation, releases, and issues . I am currently using it as a main device and resolving some bugs that I encounter.

So, in short, yes - it is possible and I would expect it to have way better hardware support than SODP based solution. I could be wrong and SODP may catch up one day.

may catch up

Nah, they have even problems copy-pasting values (High battery drainage Xperia 10 III - #61 by JacekJagosz) that are not secret between the teams, just curious if maybe someone can take the SODP work and rebase it on stock to fix all issues, no official jolla support, but suddenly all bugs disappear (just legally grey)

Always on display?

How about Xperia 5IV?

I bought a new iPhone a year ago.

My Xperia 10 iii is gathering dust, waiting for a working sailfish (no echo problem,
NO LOST CALLS, all cameras work, 4G calling works)

I would welcome a solution (any solution, also using LOS as a base), as long as also the Android support works.

I’ll have to start new thread regarding that port soon - just want to polish it a bit further. Always on display - don’t use it, cannot comment. 5IV - yes, via @vlagged . Its, in almost everything, the same port

LOS is Android, so Jolla Appsupport shouldn’t be necessary in this configuration.

Strange. IIRC I read many reports that 10 III is the best Sony port.

he meant based on LOS, meaning only the drivers, in contrast to based on AOSP.

My beloved Xperia 10 ii unfortunately had an accident (“falling down onto the pavement “) and was replaced by the 10 iii.

I used both as daily drivers, and I don’t recall having these problems (I deliberately kept the list of problems as short as possible…) with the 10iii.

So in my opinion, Xperia 10ii is better than Xperia 10iii
