Netbird on Jolla Phone

Hello,

i got my Jolla Phone today. And everything works really great.
But i can’t get Netbird to working. I tried the Android App but i can’t activate the tunnel.
(Error: This device cannot show the VPN permission dialog)

I selfhost Netbird and all my Server / Apps running over Netbird so it is mandatory for me.

Is there any solution / workaround?

Greetings

Does Netbird use Wireguard to setup the VPN?

If so, you can probably export the VPN settings as a file and load that natively into Sailfish OS’s VPN settings.

It’s what us Proton shills do to get Proton VPN working without the Android app.

The short answer is:
SFOS handles the internet connection. Android does not manage the internet connection itself. You need to set up VPN on SFOS itself for it to work.

It can be Wireguard, OpenVPN or some other formats but you need a VPN configuration file or information to get it working.

These two videos should give you an idea about it:

Hey,
it uses Wireguard but it is not compatible. But thanks

But never mind
I got it working over SSH and the binary from Netbird.
Works flawless, forgot it is Linux for a moment. lol

Might be worth writing a short how to?

It is pretty simple

  • Activate Remote connection under Sailfish Settings → Developer tools

  • Connect with ssh to the phone

  • ssh defaultuser@IP (IP and Password is on the Setting Page)

  • enter devel-su + Password to get root

  • Then follow the Guide on the Netbird Binary Install Page

  • The only downside is, there is no gui. But this is not a problem for me.

  • After Install onetime connect with netbird up and finish

I did the same thing with syncthing, works also perfectly.

Wau!!

Being able to use Netbird (Cloud) is REALLY a door opener for me in many ways. I will test this soon! Thank you!

Just one question: Netbird is developing with pretty quick pace (a bit like Sailfish ecosystem) and it is anticipated that new versions will drop daily. How do you expect that updating Netbird will function?

That is a good Question. I did not think about that. lol
But this could be easily solved with running a script which stops netbird downloads the new binary and start netbird again. This script could be auto triggered with systemd timers

where’d you get the syncthing binary from? the ARM binary from syncthing.net?

yes. this is the one i picked: https://release.syncthingcdn.net/v2.1.6/syncthing-linux-arm64-v2.1.6.tar.gz
the download link from syncthing.net

Update can be easily done by running the Linux Install Script with UPDATE_NETBIRD=true flag.

The right version for jolla is that the arm64 just want to be sure before i instsll

Yes,

i use this one: https://github.com/netbirdio/netbird/releases/download/v0.81.0/netbird_0.81.0_linux_arm64.tar.gz

Ty for the answsre can i toggle it under something on the phone or will it be turned on all the time ?

There is no gui. So it will be turned on all the time.
You could deactivate with the Terminal or write a script to only activate it for specific times or so.
I have a Update script for Netbird and Syncthing and a timer script which starts Netbird every 15 Minutes to let Syncthing sync then it shutdowns.
I will test it for a bit and if it works ok i post it. But thats only for my use case i only need Netbird for Syncthing

i‘m still waiting for my phone and i feared that netbird will not work.

thanks for confirming that its working and also: i cant wait for mine to arrive. im geeking out right now over the ssh possibilities!

(sorry for not contributing to the thread, im just happy about this)

I am a little sick right now, but i created a Repo for the Scripts i use
It is mainly for me but if anyone want to use it or copy something from it, feel free.
Netbird and Syncthing Binary Installation + Update Timer Script. I shutdown Netbird and start it every 15 minutes to let Syncthing run. Way more battery that way. (netbird-burst Scripts). But of course you can run it without downtime if you want.
I created the README with AI :stuck_out_tongue:
