Most Silica apps have no option to not shorten filenames or long strings

This is not specific to any one app but something that I perceive as a problem everywhere in SfOS UI.

But I will use this setting from harbour-file-browser to illustrate what I mean:

I miss one last option that says sth like “none/continue to next line”.

This could be solved in every app separately (and some do in some places but not in other places as seen below), but I still perceive it as a shortcoming of the Silica UI itself.

Here are examples from several apps.

gPodder

SubMusic

I could’ve dug up plenty more examples.

If line wrapping is too much to implement cleanly (it is most definitely a serious headache to get right) maybe “click to show more” would be a UX pattern that introduces less breakage.

Ie. you click an element that was cut short and it opens an area below it that shows the full text, though I’m not sure how that would behave if the element is clickable to begin with.

Funny thing is, my examples already show that this is possible.

Honestly I wouldn’t even care if it doesn’t look nice.

Of course it would have to be configurable because I’m sure many people would disagree with me there.

maybe a dconf key to take care of it globally.
