MMS works with wifi, does not work on 4G

DESCRIPTION:

MMS seem to only send and download on a wifi connection.

PRECONDITIONS:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Device is connected to wifi and mobile data.
MMS is sent from gallery image.
MMS sent with success
Wifi is turned off.
Same image as in step 2 is sent from gallery via MMS.
MMS sent with success.
Different image is sent from gallery via MMS.
MMS fails.
Same image as in step 2 is sent from gallery via MMS.
MMS fails.
Device reconnected to wifi
Same image as in step 7 is sent from gallery via MMS
MMS sent with success.

EXPECTED RESULT:

MMS would send with success regardless if device is connected to wifi or not.

ACTUAL RESULT:

MMS functionality seems to only work with connected to wifi, except if same image is sent a second time immediately after.

Does MMS actually work across wifi? I kind of thought it was like text messages (SMS) in that these always go across the mobile network?

I had MMS problems on UK EE - they couldn’t be delivered or sent. The fix, for me, was easy - the jolla supplied default APN and proxy settings for EE were wrong. Simply by googling the correct settings and using those MMS then worked fine for both sending and receiving.

The message goes through the mobile network, but extra the data goes over a generic data connection, where at least some operators allow accessing it from any connection.

This carrier is from Canada so maybe it’s the same problem.

Recognized for me in Sweden also. I had the first impression that it did work better on 4.2.0.21 on my 10 II but after the first received MMS I have to enable WiFi or HotSpot to be able to send or receive MMS. I did initially had to toggel the Dual / IP setting to get it to work on 4G but as of no I don’t think it matters.

I am not sure if Videotron shovels MMS across wifi when possible, but it would not surprise me if they do, considering their incredibly generous wifi-calling (not available on Sailfish OS of course ) which basically treats any wifi connection as the home network, allowing for both calls/SMS/MMS local to the country the internet connection is in and back to Canada.

Meaning, as an example, you go to IKEA in Brussels, connect to the wifi, and you can both call/SMS/MMS across Belgium and across Canada without any roaming charges.

So maybe they do pass what they can across wifi if possible? Is there a way to tell? Do I need to do some ofono logging?

Changing to media.ng results in exactly the same behaviour: When connected to data and wifi MMS will send, when only connected to data MMS fails to send.

Also deleting the proxy value results in MMS not working completely, so Jolla’s configuration is better than the one that Videotron provides.

Could this be a dual stack ipV4 vs ipV6 issue? or rather lack thereof? Often mobile phones are on pure ipV6 stacks these days with some flaky gateways to ipV4 land?

I’m just tossing an idea in.

I just tested MMS with my XA2, Verla, Vodafone Germany and an iPhone SE on German Telekom in both directions.
Works.
So there is no generic problem with MMS.
Wrong Gateway, maybe?

Not obviously; and it would be pretty bad network config that breaks itself.
I’d suspect DNS over this, but without supporting evidence… who knows.

I was thinking of the case where they give out ipV6 addresses but mms is still ipV4. But the last time I saw that is some years ago (Vodafone, I think). On 02 here in Germany, it’s all ipvV4. And the automagic settings for MMS are all ipV4 addresses. no names. That’s not how I’d do it

My IP on Vodafone (Germany) is 109.40.240.61, IPv4 (and I will be @ Pfefferberg ;-)), my Proxy is 139.7.29.17:80 and MMS Gate is at 139.7.24.1/servlets/mms. So no IPv6 gets in the way.

As people seems to be able to get it to work playing with the IP / Dual settings I gave it a try. After that I am not able to send or receive MMS at all. I have tried all combinations of IP / IP6 / Dual for both Data and MMS settings, but to no avail. My original setting where Dual for both and then I where able to send and receive MMS if I enabled WiFi or my HotSpot. But now fiddling with the WiFi stuff don’t help at all

Ah, interesting. On residential cable (x kabel deutschland) Vodafone is doing single stack ipV6 by default. Which is why I asked for ipV4, which I get for free, but no dualstack. pita! Strange. I set up dual stack servers all the time. It’s not that difficult!!! And dns? hmmm. Who knows.

I’m also coming to Pfefferberg. It’s just down the street from my office

(I had to ask Kabel Deutschland for the IPv4 address, too.)

The IP## I sent before where on Vodafone mobile.

DUAL stack. no way. I asked them and must have got an easily annoyed admin. Man.I’m trying to test but have to get some contacts on the phone

Edit: Just tested from 4.2. Default settings for MMS (ipV4) with both sim/wifi works. shut down wifi. MMS doesn’t work (although this might be because one needs a reboot?). turn wifi on, reboot MMS work.

I’ll see if I can append later. I’m actually using 3.4 in practice so I have to switch out hardware.

I actually tested MMS by switching off WiFi and switching on mobile network. No reboot. Standard settings for Vodafone prepaid Germany.

Strange. I would have thought it must work with IP and Loop. But It currently isn’t That’s with O2 as the 4G provider. So I seem to have the same symptoms with 4.2 and 4G. Works fine on

behaves differently but also fails if I’m only on 4G. The difference is, start sending an MMS with 4G only, watch the wheel spin. Turn on wifi, bling, the MMS goes through. On 4.2, turning on wifi doesn’t result in the MMS going through. I have to reboot.

Hmm, so from this I understand that this is not a unique bug to Videotron. I wonder if there is additional information that I could provide to help fix this bug, should it be found to be common with others also failing to have usable MMS functionality without wifi? Ofono logs? Maybe get in touch with Jolla directly?
