I’m driving a Volvo XC40 (2023) with Android Automotive (not Android Auto, Android Automotive. Great naming scheme, Google) as its main infotainment system, and I connect my Jolla Phone (2026) via Bluetooth.
While playing audio works perfectly fine (including skipping, pausing and so on; except song metadata display, which isn’t working. But that might have other causes.), and I can make calls without problems, I’m not able to get PBAP working.
Means: I can neither see my contacts on the car’s dashboard, nor my call history, and when I get called, I’m shown the plain number instead of the contact’s name.
Whenever I pair the phone with the car, the car immediately shows a warning that I need to allow contact access on the phone… which has no option for that. At least I can’t find any.
I’ve already tried re-pairing (several times), the connection type is correctly set to “Car kit”, and the supported profiles do contain PBAP. I’ve also restarted both the phone and the car’s infotainment.
Since I’ve already found some examples on this forum of people using PBAP successfully, even on cars with the same infotainment system… I’m slowly starting to feel dumb.
Does anyone have an idea on what I might be missing, or doing wrong?

Try removing the existing pairings and initiating a new pairing from the car side. The phone will ask for additional permissions, which you should allow.

Thank you, that was the important part.
At first I only removed the pairing for the Jolla Phone from both the phone and the car, and nothing changed. Once I had removed ALL pairings from the car (including non-related other phones) and then re-paired from the car side, I’ve got asked for the additional permission.
Now it’s working great. Thank you!

So that was the trick, delete my other connections. I had it working at first a few months ago .
But is your favourites shown in the favourites list in the car. Mine is empty but not in the phones list.
Favourites were shown, as far as I remember.
Funny thing: Since today the connection does not work anymore, even if i try to re-pair the phone with the car as described before. PBAP also fully disappeared from the list of supported profiles … so most probably either the car, or the phone, have gone weird.
I did not yet have time to take a deeper look at it, yet.
I have the same issue. When paired after a total reset and the phone have also asked for permission regarding PBAP, the contacts was shown, except for favourites,. But the next time the phone connects to the car, PBAP is lost. Third time now. Have rebooted both the phone and also the Volvo Info system. Works with my Android Sony phone without any issues.
I suspect it might be related to the issue with the OBEX service. I experience very similar behaviour (contacts almost never show) with my Xperia 10 III and SFOS 5.1 in my Citroën C5. Restarting the OBEX service sometimes helps, but unfortunately I can’t say that it always works.
This is what I run as the default user with regular privileges. Can you try if it improves anything with your situation?
systemctl restart --user obex.service

Yes! When I restart the obex service, and then reconnect the phone to the car, everything works as intended
