Looking at Android settings via AppSupport triggers a memory leak from installd process

DESCRIPTION:

There is something wrong with the AppSupport and setting Android app permissions. Whenever I’ll look at an app’s android settings via the Settings → Apps → some app → Open Android settings, the phone hangs and eventually reboots from OOM killer activity.

The culprit seems to be the installd process, and I can see that it eats up all available memory by looking at the process list from Lighthouse. I’m not sure how to debug this further. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction? I did try to look up logs from the terminal and journalctl and appsupport’s logcat, but there is too much noise in there, and I didn’t see anything related to the installd process.

I’m not sure when this began. But I’m positive I didn’t have this problem before updating to 5.0.0

PRECONDITIONS:

Have an Android app installed and AppSupport running.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Go to settings → Apps → some android app
Choose “Open Android settings”
Observe the installd process eating up all memory and eventually the phone will hang.

EXPECTED RESULT:

You can actually change Android apps permissions and the phone will remain usable.

ACTUAL RESULT:

The phone will slow down and evetually hang. Rebooting fixes the issue.

MODIFICATIONS:

I’m using CHUM, Open repos, F-droid and Aurorastore. Installing software from 3rd party store fronts does not trigger the memory leak.

Does the app settings window actually appear before the hang? I can’t reproduce this myself. I just get the android window and no runaway process. Wondering if something’s not upgraded properly or similar on your device.

Yes. The settings window works normally. It actually took me some time to figure out, that it is the Android settings window that triggers this behaviour.

I’m on the verge of just wiping the whole phone and doing a fresh Sailfish image flash. I’ve been daily driving SailfishX for three years and I’m dreading the whole process of configuring everything and every app back again. I’m actually considering other options at this point.

It’s difficult to guess what’s going on without some logs or something, but I think it’s probably something particular to your install. Can you get some logcat output from AAS?

Here’s a long AAS logcat I got just now. I started with rebooting the phone. The first thing I did after that was Settings → Apps → Seafile (Android app) → Open Android settings. I looked at the permissions, backed out and eventually closed the settings window.

I copied the log from when the com.seafile.seadroid2 appeared in the logcat. The timestamp matched the time, when I opened the settings.

By the time I cut the log, installd had eaten ~25% of memory.

Bah, that looks completely normal I’m afraid. If you were considering reflashing, then first maybe try renaming the /home/.appsupport directory when AAS is stopped to just reset the Android bit, while keeping your android_storage at least. If that doesn’t fix it, then you can restore the original directory and get everything back.
