List of features that should be included give you ideas too

I can add some of the ideas that should be included in the list and hopefully we can get the developers some ideas what to incluce in the future Sailfish Os updates when they have managed to move from the assembly lines. Give ideas and if some idea is bad we can remove it from the list.

Sailfish os feuture request.

Lets start in settings.

Ambient/ Themes.

  • Should have setting that allows to crop the photo in the wanted style box it to the 1:1 or 1:2 don’t know what the resolution is on the sceen.

What do you seriously expect anyone to do with this?
You also seem to call a lot of fairly complicated features “settings”.
Several of the tings that you propose are also plain impossible.

What is the point of repeating this over and over?

If you don’t mind, I’d also like to add my own list underneath yours. Here’s what I would add:

First, in the Phone app, why doesn’t the block remain in place after you block someone?

Second, for example, if I’m browsing Instagram or doing something else and somebody calls me, why does the incoming call take over my entire screen? If I’m already inside an app, it would be much better if the call appeared as a small box at the top instead. Or if you have a better idea for how this should work, I’ll leave that up to you.

Also, I don’t think any Sailfish OS phone has a proper noise-filtering feature. On the Xperia 10 III, the sound of the wind literally gets transmitted to my friend. Sometimes the person on the other end can genuinely get annoyed by what they hear through my microphone. Please add a filtering/noise-reduction feature like we had back in the N9 days.

About the Gallery app: you’ve put the option for selecting multiple photos inside the hamburger menu, okay, that’s fine. But after selecting 6 or 7 photos, I don’t have a share option. Why can’t I share multiple photos at once?

Another thing about the Gallery: when you open it, it looks really nice because Photos, Videos, Screenshots, etc. are all separated into neat sections. That’s great. But why don’t we have a “Recently Deleted” section? Maybe I deleted a photo and regretted it, or maybe I deleted it by mistake. How am I supposed to restore it?

Also, why isn’t there a “Hidden Photos” section? There could be an area that can’t be opened without entering a password, where I could keep photos that I generally don’t want anyone else to see. At the very least, I think something like this should come as a default feature.

Now, about the Camera app. In general, if we compare it with cameras on other phones, it doesn’t capture a huge amount of detail. But I’ll say this clearly: compared to the iPhone, the colour detail and overall image quality are insanely good. I’ve also seen that you’re already working on improving detail on the JP26 and trying to make it capture more detail, so I can’t really complain too much about that, but I still wanted to mention it.

Another problem with the Camera app is that it opens very slowly. And it’s not only the Camera app, a lot of apps have this issue because of the sandbox system. We’ve already talked about that, but like I said, I hate apps opening slowly. It genuinely makes me angry.

The Camera app is also missing a lot of features. There are no megapixel settings. In video mode, there aren’t proper options for choosing what resolution you want, such as how many “p” or “K” you want to record in. There are no different modes like landscape modes either. Sailfish may be the master of swipe-based interaction, but even though that’s one of the strengths of the system, we still don’t have a stylish native Camera app where you can swipe between different shooting modes and different ways of using the camera. In my opinion, the Camera app should be one of the strongest and most ambitious parts of a phone.

Now, about the Browser app. To be fair, this is already something that’s being worked on. Thanks to Andrew, he said he is working on ESR 140, and I’m sure those lag and stuttering problems will eventually disappear. But there’s another point I want to bring up about the browser.

Look, I’d even bet on this: most iOS users usually don’t use a different browser for daily use because Safari makes things easy for them and consists of very simple and straightforward controls. Now look at Samsung users, basically one of your competitors. A lot of Samsung users, when they need to do something on the web, often go through browsers like Google Chrome instead of using Samsung Internet.

Why? Because of the complexity. Doing something, closing a tab, going back, going forward, in general everything feels unnecessarily complicated, so people move away from it.

The same applies to our browser. Of course, one reason people use browsers like Firefox is because our browser is based on an old engine, but the design itself also needs attention. When I want to do a very simple action, the browser feels incredibly clumsy even for something that should require just one tap. It seriously exhausts me.

About the keyboard: I assume adding Gboard would probably cost you a decent amount of money, so forget it if that’s going to hurt you financially. If it genuinely means spending a lot of money, then it isn’t necessary.

But there’s one thing I want to point out. For example, I’m doing something on the phone, maybe I’m ordering clothes, and then it says, “A verification code has been sent to your number for your card.” Great. The verification code arrives, but why doesn’t that code automatically appear above my keyboard so I can tap it directly? Most of the time I have to look at the notification and manually type the code. Of course, this isn’t a massive problem, but I still think it’s something worth addressing.

I actually really like the design of the Settings app, but the lack of a search function used to make things really difficult for me. Thankfully, our friend htneb created a patch that adds a search option to Settings, and I really recommend that you try it.

Maybe the Jolla team might say, “We only have around 30 sections in Settings anyway, it’s not that much, so why would we need search?” But I want to explain something. When I was new to Sailfish OS and I asked people for help, someone would say, “Go into Settings, then go here, then open this,” and after they explained it, I would keep opening and closing different sections without understanding where the hell I was supposed to go.

Having a search field where I can directly type what I’m looking for and immediately see where that option is located is absolutely brilliant. I really think this should be properly considered and evaluated.

As for the SIM card situation, I actually know what can be improved there because this recently became a topic of discussion.

First of all, that SIM-card tray design you introduced with the Jolla Phone 2026, whoever designed that deserves to have his hand kissed. Seriously. The guy managed to create a mechanism where you can fit both an SD card and two SIM cards, and not only fit them, but also make them very easy to insert and remove. My friend, whoever you are, hats off to you. Seriously, hats off.

But there’s a problem.

Let’s say I’m using a Sony Xperia 10 III. I remove the SIM card because I want to insert or remove my SD card. Then I put the SIM card back in. It asks me for the PIN. Fine, no problem. I enter the PIN, and then ding, a message appears at the top telling me that the phone needs to be restarted or else the SIM won’t be detected.

Come on, seriously?

I should also add that some people have told me they don’t have this problem at all and that their SIM simply becomes active again without asking for anything. But when I complained about this issue, some other people said they experience the same thing as me. So I think this is another issue that should be properly tested and investigated.

About the lock screen, I’d also like to add something to the features our friend mentioned.

Swiping up from the bottom to open the Sailfish camera is a good idea, and I genuinely congratulate whoever came up with it. But people naturally need quick access to other things too, like the flashlight.

And guess what? There is no flashlight button on the lock screen.

You have to swipe down, open the Top Menu and activate it from there.

About the Clock app: alarms ring for far too short a time. Sometimes I genuinely miss appointments because of this, and that’s really bad. I don’t know what causes it, but I’ve seen alarms ring for around 10 seconds and then never ring again. I have no idea what causes that.

And one more issue I want to draw attention to is RAM and multitasking. Stability between apps is very poor. I think the N9 also had a similar problem.

Sometimes Android apps can be extremely heavy on the system. For example, I might be talking to someone, and while they’re telling me something I get a little bored and want to browse Instagram or check something else at the same time. But the moment I start scrolling through Instagram Reels, everything becomes about twice as laggy. I don’t know what exactly causes this because I’m a beginner when it comes to this subject.

Those are all the additional features and improvements that came to my mind.

Of course, I’m not pretending that every single thing I listed absolutely has to be added. That would be unrealistic. But I genuinely think at least some of these things are major necessities, just like some of the missing features already mentioned by the person who created this topic.

I’ll add a short and minor one. I’ve never come to like the SF method of selecting time (and to a lesser degree, date), i.e. “set white dots to imaginary clock hands position”. I’d prefer a simple, profane numpad.

@PolatBirdal, for alarm duration, my obvious solution is to select an adequately long and intrusive sound, one of the ringtones. The old Nadeshiko pink or Aloe do the job

In the EU, this is perhaps due to old habits, while in the rest of the world people have no choice. Outside of EU, all browsers on iOS are just reskinned Safari browsers (Apple forces developers to use the same WebKit engine they use), and this was also the case in the EU until early 2024 (I don’t know how many developers maintain two different versions of their browser or just ship the WebKit one also in EU).

I have been testing this! :slightly_smiling_face:
(Ignore the offset icon, it annoys me as much as you would think it does)

Not mature yet, need alot more testing.

Though upstream implementation sounds difficult i’d say.

There are already patches, apps or workarounds for many of that. Please take a look.

Take a look especially for native Situations or Automagic.

IMO SFOS is not yet for those who only want convenient. But if a user puts a little effort here and there it can be very flexible, usable, versatile and way more private then the big two.

Genuine question (I don’t want to sound confrontational): what are the upsides in having Muoto in settings? I’m asking cause I’ve got that feedback already, so I’m curious in how it would be different day to day

OCD
I dont personally like apps that i set and forget things on so i thought it had a better place in settings instead of always being present in the app drawer.

I also wanted to see if i could bypass the lipstick restart, but i guess you hit those walls before i ever even started tinkering with it

Fair enough :joy: I only really tried doing that back in the UI Themer days, but it wasn’t really possible because the whole UI ran as root (which wasn’t the greatest design choice, let’s say). With the switch to Muoto, as root is managed off UI, it could be possible.

The main issue with that is still app discoverability. While “seasoned” users know where to look, I could see the confusion of a new user expecting “new app installed = new icon on the launcher”.

So I’m quite torn on this one, probably a patch or an option in settings would be a good middle ground, I don’t know yet to be honest with you.

What do you mean by “bypass the lipstick restart”?

To apply the icons for android apps a restart of lipstick is needed and done automatically by the app.
Bit of that, but i realized quite quick that it wouldnt work without the restart. :stuck_out_tongue:
