Hi… I have been using the unlicensed SFOS version on my XA2 and have to admit I’m impressed however, not getting updates bothers me a little. So I’m looking at the legacy licensed version and I notice that it has google apps listed as a benefit (you cannot be serious), which suggests that the google systems services package is also installed. My question is do I have to compromise my ungoogled policy in order to get updates? or can it be downloaded without the Gapps element altogether same as the free version?
All my regular devices (Desktops/Laptops) run Ungoogled Chromium. My previous phone, a Oneplus 3T, I had Hydrogen OS 9.0 running Bromite and now Cromite. So having enjoyed the ungoogled life style for some time now I am hoping I can keep it that way whilst still enjoying the Sailfish experience.
It surely cannot have said “google apps”. There is Android App Support (Google Play Services most definitely not included).
It’s about as “Ungoogled” as they come - not to mention entirely optional to install and even if installed, optional to run.
You also don’t have to reflash anything; it’s just optional stuff becoming available in store and updates starting to show in the GUI.
But i honestly have a hard time taking you fully seriously when you mention an Android distribution misrepresenting as a separate OS and a slightly patched Chromium repackaging misrepresenting as a fork.
You are correct, can only have been some kind of subliminal assumption on my part but it’s music to my ears all the same. When I bought the Oneplus 3T it was an Oxygen OS device but shortly after I decided I needed to get away from the big G and not wanting to take a knock on the phone I decided to flash it with Hydrogen which TBH is really just enhanced AOSP same as Oxygen only without the spyware. I don’t believe it has ever been misrepresented in anyway though as it is what it is, but one thing it most definitely is, is ungoogled. As for UC, to say it’s a slightly patched Chromium is also a little unfair as the objective was to build a stripped out version of Chromium that had all the benefits of blink rendering without all the spyware and once again it does exactly what it says on the tin. It has to be regarded as a fork by the community because whatever it is, it’s not Chromium.
Sometimes things don’t have to be unnecessarily complicated in order for them to be effective at what they do.
