Licencing model for IV and V: Perpetual or Recurring Payment?

Hi Sailors!
Just opened here a thread to discuss updates about the licencing model that will be used in future phone releases by Jolla.

It seems already that Jolla listened to first feedbacks and is getting a perpetual licence ready for the Xperia IV and V .

Here a small Poll.

Given the expected life of a 10 V, which for me is about 2 years ± 6 mo, €75 is about where I’d draw the line.

I am more skeptical than you. They have only have been prodiding lip service. There is no implementation in the store of a perpetual license, even though AppSupport has been out for a couple of days now and implementing it is not that hard. So at this point, seeing is believing.

i, for one, would never pay the subscription.
i would happily pay for a license, and then also donate money monthly, patreon style, as long as i didnt HAVE to in order to keep using any features of my phone.
its just that the idea of renting software gives me the ick. i picture running zypper and being told my credit card has expired…

agreed.

i understand that part of the push for a subscription model was to bring revenue up to a more sustainable level for Jolla.

fine, i’m happy to pay more, but the quid pro quo is maintaining a perpetual licence for future products.

No it was not! It was the answer to some loud members of this community, who thought it would help Jolla’s finances. The ones against it (including me) just wasn’t loud enough.

Hmmm… I have 3 Xperia 10 in use, my wife has one. 5yrs old devices, some small hardware fixes were necessary in this long time but spare parts were available and all phones still working like a charm.

I also prefere to use my phones on a long term, maybe around 4 years each. Therefore - that’s 100€ from me worth @least.

no. you can’t take away their agency; they are the company owning the product, choosing how to monetise that product. their decision.

they can offer a licencing model if they wish, no issue with that. but they won’t make any money from me with it. or you apparently.

there are those of us who wish to buy a product and not rent a service, our job is to make them understand that.

I’m not going to argue with that. I just don’t think they would have thought to introduce the subscription model, if it hadn’t been for those few loud elements.
But then again, I’m not familiar with Jollas business so I might be wrong.
Also they have promised in addition a perpetual licence so why even keep on nagging about it?
Just relax and wait, and we will se how much it is.
This poll is just stupid.

I realise that not everyone is like me, but I use my phones like tools, not as if they are jewelry.

I’ve basically never had a phone last beyond two years without needing major repairs. My FP2 lasted about 4 years, but had major part replacements every 18 months or so.

The phone is a tool, but maybe not a replacement for the hammer.

One is daily driver, the 2nd is the Internet access/VPN for the house WLAN and the 3rd is for tinkering and experiments.

Necessary maintenance of the phones was exchanging one broken display and exchanging 3 bloated batteries. I think it was it worth, as I could do it myself. And good for environment.

edit: jewellery is the time I invested until the phones did work satisfying. If I were paid for the time… No I wouldn’t be a rich woman but nice holiday journey for 3 weeks / 2 persons should be enough.

Sorry slightly OT, but it is unclear to me wether we will get also a perpetual licence for existing products, like i.e. 10 III. I think this was also the intention standing the planning in Jolla love day and other comunications.

It was communicated a few times that all currently supported devices are falling into a common ā€œlegacy licenseā€ which is priced as of right now 24,9 Euro per lifetime license. Subscription/perpetual option is only meant for new devices which are the C2 and 10 IV/V.

I haven’t seen any announcements yet on a perpetual license. Did I miss something, or is it just vaporware?
