Keyboard eats first tap after switching layouts via swipe

REPRODUCIBILITY: 100% (always)
OSVERSION: 5.2.0.17
HARDWARE: Jolla Phone (2026) - jp2601 - jp2601 - 1.0.0.17 - aarch64
UI LANGUAGE: English (UK) (user: en_GB, os: en_GB.utf8)
REGRESSION: yes and no (since: 5.1.0.11 - aarch64, see list from @rla88 below)

DESCRIPTION:

Keyboard eats first tap after switching between layouts, e.g. between English and Emoji
Edit: (Jolla Phone 2026) This happens only when switching via swipe, not when long-pressing Space and then selecting the new layout.

PRECONDITIONS:

More than one keyboard layout installed

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Use an app that brings up the on-screen keybord
  2. Start typing
  3. Swipe to switch to emoji keyboard
  4. Tap to insert any emoji

EXPECTED RESULTS:

Emoji to appear in the text field where I’m writing

ACTUAL RESULTS:

First tap after switching layout does nothing. Second and subsequent taps work as expected

ADDONS:

  • AAS Bluetooth Bridge: no

MODIFICATIONS:

  • Patchmanager: no
  • OpenRepos: yes
  • Chum: yes
  • Other: none specified

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Edit: Switching layout (on Jolla Phone 2026) by long-pressing Space does not trigger the bug.

Edit: I use stock keyboard with three layouts: en, sv, emoji. Removing one layout in Settings made no difference.

Edit: Tested with:

  • Audio Recorder (Jolla; naming recording)
  • Bugger!
  • Calendar (Jolla)
  • Clock (Jolla; naming an alarm)
  • Conversations (AAS)
  • Messages (Jolla; recipient&body)
  • Notes (Jolla)

Edit: This seems like a bug that has been coming and going for a while:

This is an old bug, no regression. And of course is it worth to report this old bug.

Maybe? I don’t remember seeing this on any device or OS version for the last 8+ years…

As noted, it works correctly in the latest version of SFOS available for other devices (running on Xperia Xiii, Xperia XA2 and Jolla C2).

Can confirm this also on a JP2026 phone with 5.2.0.17.

Seems to work fine for me, also switching between English and Emoji. Is it in specific applications or with specific kinds of text inputs?

I have tested with various apps, updated OP to reflect this.
I also reduced my set of layouts to English and emoji, to no avail. (Added to OP)

I tested between Finnish and English layouts with different devices and Notes app. Phone language setting is Finnish. To introduce the bug the layout has to be changed with swipe. If changing by long pressing the space and selecting the layout, the bug cannot be produced by me:

Jolla 1, Pallas-Yllästunturi 3.4.0.24: The bug does not exist

Jolla C, Sauna 4.6.0.15: The bug does not exist

Sony XperiaX, Sauna 4.6.0.15: The bug exists

Jolla C2, Pispala 5.1.0.11: The bug does not exist

Jolla Phone 2026, Finlayson 5.2.0.17: The bug exists

Tested on Jolla Phone 2026 with emoji layout also and the bug could be produced.

Thanks! Can confirm swipe vs. long-tap, now updating OP
edit: I also included your list in the OP

In case you use the long-press method, would you mind testing again by swiping to change layout?

You’re right, it’s only on swiping!
