Jolla Phone : First Experiences, Pros and Cons

Do you live in Tromsø? :anxious_face_with_sweat:

One is Screencast on Chum.

No Clue. It’s been about a decade since I tried there. Not a fan.

I have used Jolla more than 11 years so maybe I have used to that.

I think I am still in my honeymoon period with my Jolla Phone 2026. But still, in the few days I have had it, I have experienced many aspects where it could improve. This feedback may be useful to Jolla, even if it may seem like a dump of problems with their OS due to “user error”, since I’ll be (understandably) focusing mostly on the bad things. I welcome helpful tips and/or corrections from the community as some things still appear puzzling to me.

The packaging is nice, and I see there a references to the Jolla website for guidance ( UX Framework - Sailfish OS ). However, in that page the image shown for the Home Screen does not actually display the Home Screen but the App Grid. I found that confusing because the text does not match the illustration or the experience I was having on the phone.

The packaging could also contain a note that says “please charge the phone before first use”. It seems common sense looking back (it may be safer to ship a depleted battery), but not everyone thinks of this. I decided to simply turn the phone on immediately. As soon as I noticed the battery was at 3%, I connected it to an USB-C cable that was connected to a computer (that was powered off but still provided some charge). I use this cable to charge my phones slowly to prevent battery heating. I think that this connection caused the phone to enter a different mode at startup and I faced a testing/diagnostic application instead of the usual setup program. The phone still worked fine but I did not have to accept the Jolla license and had to setup everything “manually” – no problem there, but some things did not seem to work OK. Namely I found the following issues:

  • Wifi setup with WPS push button method kept forgetting the password (probably when losing the signal). My router also comes with a QR code to setup the connection but I could not find a way to use that on Sailfish.
  • “Automatic time zone update”: my time zone was never recognized (even with location turned on), which I think was the entire point of this setting.
  • I could not transfer file through NFC or Bluetooth. It has been a long time since I last managed to use NFC to transfer data between Android devices (so I am not blaming Jolla here but I would welcome help here), but Bluetooth pairs fine but then fails to receive files or even acknowledge an incoming transfer. This issue was later resolved after the factory reset (see post below).
  • I found the WLAN and the “Connect to Internet” thing confusing. I know I can connect to the Internet without a WLAN, and I can connect to the WLAN and not connect to the Internet. I still need to explore this further, but for now it does not seem intuitive to me.
  • The Jolla account kept failing to recognize my login and password. The Internet browser was working fine, but Jolla was not accepting my credentials – and thy were correct.
  • This is an issue with a built-in app, but, for completeness, I lament the lack of tags and tag filter on the People app. I have about 5 starred contacts, infrequent contacts and then many, many entries I don’t expect to call, but I wish to have them recognized should they call me. Just two tiers of contacts is not useful to me.

I eventually did a factory reset, and the startup program welcomed me. I’ll continue on a different post as I find that this one is already long enough.

As a continuation of my post above, I did a factory reset and got the regular experience. But it was not perfect.

I enabled the fingerprint access control and pressed my finger until the image was full. The next step was to setup the Wifi connection. This time the WSP (push button on the router) did not work at all, and the program insisted on the password. Based on what I am seeing, the discrete password is kind of fading way, since none was explicitly provided with my last router. I decided to retry the WPS process, just to be sure, so I pressed outside the password text box and the setup program seemed to advance to the next step (skipping Wifi setup), talking about setting up an Internet connection (setting up mobile broadband, I thought). To return to the Wifi setup I pressed the option to return the previous step in the setup.

Contrary to what I believed, the Internet step was still part of the WLAN sections despite presenting something different, and I found myself further back, setting up the fingerprint access! The fingerprint progress tracker was shown empty and now, despite pressed my finger against the sensor over and over, Sailfish was not reporting much progress (unlike just before). My guess is that, while the progress tracker is set at zero when entering the screen, the fingerprint data was kept intact from before and each new finger press now contributes little new information and new information is what is required to advance the progress tracker. And I needed to fill the progress tracker in order to return to the Wifi step, so I had to vary my finger position a lot and press it about 40 times to advance.

Once more, the Wifi could not be set through WPS from the setup program. I am aware that I can extract this password from the QR code using another device (or the same device outside the setup program), but I am addressing the Jolla experience here, which is not great. I had to skip the WLAN/Internet step and also the App stores one (which means the rest of the first use setup).

Let us revisit my issues from before, now that I have run the proper setup program:

  • I cannot add a WLAN connection. In Settings/WLAN, I see no way to scan/connect to a visible network or to manually add a new connection. This is not ideal. I can only turn WLAN on or off, with no practical difference. Rebooting did not change this.
  • The Automatic time zone is as mysterious as before.
  • Bluetooth can receive files now! It can also send them. This is good.
  • “Connect to Internet” is a no-op now.
  • I have yet to see if I can connect to my Jolla account, since I have no Internet on the phone.
  • And of course, the People app did not change.

I do not wish to conclude on a bad tone. I do enjoy the battery protection option. I just wish I could turn on Battery Saving mode at 40% of battery available, but I can live with the current maximum of 10%. Also, the different settings screen for applications is a nice touch, since we don’t change them all the time, and setting them aside in this way helps streamlining apps to their most common usage mode.

It is only sad that I think that my Jolla experience is limited (no network) and not as good as it ought to be.

My understanding for this has been since the 90s, that the phone uses the cell towers clock to get the correct time, so it sounds like you don’t have SIM card in your phone?

Some people have reported, that the WLAN has started working after they inserted a SIM card in their phone. If this fixes it for you, then it should keep working even if you remove the SIM card from the phone in the future.

Did you find the top pulley menu. pull down the screen with your thumb pressed to screen

Inari blue: It is not clear from your messages if you have installed the Inari Blue Notifier - app to make the Inari Blue logo react to calls and notifications

GPS indoors You could install Stumblefish: a BeaconDB stumbler for Sailfish OS and run it a few times while you’re walking outside on your daily routine. It collects beacons (MAC addresses) while GPS is acquiring, and sends them to a big online database. Later when you connect Location, it will recognise the beacons (cells, wifi, bluetooth) around you and calculates the Location instantly without seeing satellites.

no wallet app NFC is not supported in the Android App Support, so not even Android payment apps will work. But you can check here if your bank app works Banking apps on Sailfish OS

What works: Synology Drive Feel free to enter your positive and negative findings into https://sailfishos.app/

No I haven´t installed it yet, anyway for now I have the light turned off.

Yes, but again, the experience is less smooth cmpared to other android devices.

Yeah I know, and is ok, And this was also mentioned in my post.
I was just stating what was missing, in my case i don ´t use it very often, since I use 3 different cards for payments, and it is much faster taking them out of the wallet, than take out the phone from the pocket, unlock it (sometime using the pin instead of the fingerprint) locate and open the walllet app, switch card, and then tap! So not a big miss for me, was more a statement

Will do, thanks for sharing the link.

The apps that control the light are to be used that way, with the light initially turned off. They’ll turn it on and off as needed.

You can also try Pharos, which sets the Inari Blue light to a lowest possible intensity, not spending much battery but enough to find the phone on your night stand while you sleep. Find your JP2 in the night - Constant mode (not pattern) for the Inari Blue LEDs - #5 by ric9k

There is also toh-notify to control the Inari Blue backcover.

Great insight! Indeed, after inserting a SIM card the time zone was adjusted correctly and the “Connect to Internet” pull down menu is now working.

@silakka I did, but it stopped working after I aborted the setup program.

Thank you both.

I’am still not able to connect. I went outside to be shure that no other device is connected. JP26 doesn’t see other bluetooth devices as well. There seems to be somthing wrong with bluetooth on my JP26

You should test it with CSD. Tap on SFOS version number 5 times in the settings to open it.

So after a week of trying, I decided I am not ready to make the switch and will be returning the phone.

If someone would like to buy it from me before the withdrawal is processed feel free to contact me.

it is a batch 3 with the orange TOH, glass screen protector and transparent case. perfect condition, obviously.

i am asking exactly what I paid and not the current price. would be happy to see it with somebody bringing it to use.

Mailing within Germany, payment via bank transfer in advance. and as required I have to point out it is a private sale, so no refunds, warranty or returns to/by me.

I now tested it. When the app support bluetooth is uninstalled it works. If the app support bluetooth is installed. CSD fails and says Bluetooth is not available.
The Problem is, that I need the app support for my car and my Garmin watch. Do I need to do a factory reset (would be anoying i guess)

That’s topic for the Bluetooth thread.

I’ve used the new Jolla Phone for a few weeks now and honestly, this is the best phone I’ve ever had.

I’m a Linux power user who has chopped and changed between iOS and Android for the past decade (maybe longer?), and now I feel like I’ve actually landed on the perfect device for me.

So much is abstracted and dumbed down in modern phones that “smartphone” is almost an oxymoron at this point.

Sailfish OS and the quality of the Jolla Phone 2 surpass my previous daily driver (iPhone 16). In most cases I’ve been able to find Sailfish equivalents of the main apps I use. I’ve found myself with more control over my phone, while at the same time feeling less “addicted” to it (I think these two things are related).

My most-used apps are Whisperfish, Bitsailor, the native email and calendar apps, and Ghosteel (my own app, full disclosure). The native mail app is great, though I did miss swipe-to-archive and swipe-to-delete, I was able to add both myself via a patch created with PatchManager.

All in all, just wanted to post this quick message to thank the @Jolla team for delivering a truly awesome product. I look forward to seeing where this goes in future. I hope this can be my daily driver for a very long time!
