Jolla Phone: Articles, videos and discussions summary

Ok, thanks, I missread, too quickly.
Did you feel a big difference in the resulting pictures, between AAS+Camera2 and the native camera app?

Can’t say I have tested it enough to know, to be honest. Haven’t tinkered more with OpenCamera since @fingus asked. But happy to discuss it further in another thread, wouldn’t want to derail this one

Haha, Right. I would the first one to grumble.

Ok, done. Here, we have a thread to discuss and compare pictures

A big improvement in Camera API 2.0 is the fast burst mode for capturing the three mandatory exposures for HDR in one quick shot. Without it, OpenCamera takes three separate pictures with different exposures on its own, which is much slower and take up to three seconds for one HDR photo.

Thanks, interesting.
But only available in AAS at the moment, right?

(I made a more appropriated thread (corrected my previous post where I didn’t state it clearly).
Perhaps we sh/could move our posts?)

I don’t know.

By the way, the source code of OpenCamera and the HDR algorithm is open source. Maybe it’s also possible to compile or port a native Sailfish OS app for it.

Just got Finnish union paper, Insinööri lehti, and there was article regarding Jolla and Jolla phone! Just super happy to see it and what was new public comment from Sami I assume was that Jolla’s goal is to hire 10-20 new employees still this year! I find that to be quite a huge thing considering that they currently employee around 30 persons. Sales and marketing persons are mentioned, which is great

Oohlalaa!
Hopefully their recruit goes well and they get competent and energetic people :+1:

I truly hope the same! Always better to find right people than rush and get something.

My bingo card for 10 employees would be (made for fun):

1 Head of Sales (currently they don’t have dedicated person as far as I know only for sales)

2 dedicated sales person

1 head of marketing (if they have already, then 1 more person to do the marketing and updating the websites)

3 dedicated customer support persons (would start with these as probably easiest to get)

3 more persons for the QA and final assembly to Salo ramp up the production

This wouldn’t yet increase the dev capabilities of Jolla in short term, but this would free up the old GOATs in mid term after they have been able to transfer these duties out of their hands. Currently at least I believe the devs also do all these themselves, which is always time off from actually improving SFOS. And I want to highlight this was just fun personal stream of thoughts and doesn’t base on anything than my ass feeling

Really? That’s kind of amazing, after 5 years in the startup scene I learned one thing
 Sales sales sales sales.

I hope that this is the turning-the-corner for Jolla, they have a killer product, the market is begging for it, there are major pressures on their competitors now, and there’s a big enthusiasm in the newly reinvigorated community.

Maybe the Jolla has finally landed on a virgin island, and a new era is starting.

Is it possible to buy shares directly?

Yeap and historically we Finns have been quite bad with sales and marketing. I hope Jolla succeeds in that front! But I also see very good changes of Jolla succeeding here, better than this market situation they can’t dream of really. At least the revenue growth is in startup numbers, over ten times higher this year than 2024

I would also be interested to buy shares! My biggest fear is that current owners again start to sell shares to non Europeans. I hope Jolla has learned from the past.

What I am wondering myself, the silence in the media on the Jolla phone is deafening. In March at the fair there was quite some coverage but are they just not following up, not reporting on stuff they don’t get for free and almost pushed onto them or are they simply still waiting in line or just got it and ut needs some more time? I am not so much thinking about mainstream tech media but some of the privacy or degoogling influencers that have talked about Sailfish OS in the past.

They live from clicks, ads and free stuff I guess.

I think Jolla has gotten some good media coverage in old school media like news platforms. I think all of the main media sites have made at least one article about Jolla phone, Jolla and Sailfish

Most of the devices Jolla makes goes to the people who pre-ordered. Jolla apparently only has a small number of devices for media reviews and even the Finnish press has published very few reviews of the Jolla Phone. The last time I heard people asking for a review from Finland’s largest tech website, the answer was that they hadn’t yet received a test device to review.

I wonder if they are waiting for a free handout, which may or may not come or if they paid for it and simply are still in the queue (not entirely unreasonable as we are now barely at the beginning of batch 2 if I am not mistaken).

Given that Jolla is currently fully consumed by serving existing orders, there is likely no need for more marketing but I would assume that at some point supply is going to push past initial demand. At that point, rather before that point it would be good to have some review, also international reviews out there, at least in the inclined niche of media and influencers, not directly form the Jolla bubble.

As far as I remember, the lead figure of the site said the person in charge of mobile reviews of their site had been in talks with Jolla, and they were promised a test device (this was before Day1 event), and later on another occasion he stated that there haven’t been any further updates/progress/contact from Jolla’s side.
