Jolla Phone 2026 whitelisted?

As I understand Jolla Phone 2026 needs to be whitelisted by providers to use VoLTE. My sim is from Iliad (Italy) and they told me that my sim already is able by default to use VoLTE.

That seems as two people talking different languages. I can’t ask Iliad Italy to whitelist Jolla Phone 2026 to VoLTE, but Jolla can. Currently my Phone can’t use VoLTE and I can’t do anything useful about.

According to who? Where did this info come from?

This forum? Doesn’t sound very authoritative.
And why did you not post in that thread if it already exists?

A lot of people say that some mobile providers in some countries only allow VoLTE on phones they have whitelisted.

Sure, whitelists do exist. But if you can ask to be added just like that, they are even more useless than i imagined.

Based on some internet research one can discover:

  • The device may need some config to be able to interoperate with a specific carrier. I don’t know what is (not) present on the Jolla Phone 2026, or how to find out. For context, Some xda-developers forum post claims this may live in the modem on Qualcomm chips. This other post shows (in the spoiler section) some IMS config from a Samsung phone.
  • Some carriers seem to use a whitelist based on, I assume, IMEI prefixes (e.g. 3G switch off: Check your device compatibility lets you enter the first 8 digits of an IMEI).
  • Some carriers require testing before allowing devices to use VoLTE e.g.:

[carrier] is committed to providing our customers with a seamless and reliable mobile experience. To achieve this we perform rigorous testing in order to identify the devices that are able to provide high quality voice, messaging, and data on our network and that have the required carrier files installed by manufacturers to support our unique features. If your device is not listed below it will not work with [carrier] and we are unable to troubleshoot it. All devices must also be unlocked.

Note that in general I’d expect calls to fall back to earlier tech (e.g. 2G) instead of failing all together.

(source, from a specialist mobile service provider).

So what now?

It seems that the GSMA is recognising this as an issue. The self-accreditation for device OEMs mentioned here sounds interesting, although it is being mentioned in the same “GSMA’s Interoperability Testing service” and I don’t know what that entails. From that page:

The mutual adoption and support of P#6/P#4 by MNO networks and devices is intended to address the logjam of having to test every device in every network and to facilitate VoLTE interoperability and deployment.

(emphasis mine).

It also seems the GSMA have some kind of settings exchange.

All in all, it looks like this problem isn’t unique to Jolla, but affects a lot of other device OEMs and carriers as well. It looks like the GSMA is aware of the issue and has some ideas how it might be fixed. However, I don’t know at what cost (time/money/contractual obligations/etc) it would come and whether it would actually address specific operator/phone compatibility issues.

One can hope though.
