I received my jolla phone a few days ago and I’m spending time getting used to it and setting up things.
One issue I can’t resolve is the steppy scrolling.
My previous device was a pixel 7a with graphene os on it and moving on to the j2 seems like going back a decade regarding screen smoothness.
This is a overall experience which gets worse on android apps.
For example, in the sfos settings, if I flick to scroll and leave the content to move without my finger touching the screen, the scrolling seems smooth, but if I drag my finger to scroll I get steppy scrolling and text has top and bottom edges slightly blurred.
This happens everywhere and on some apps (homeassistant for example) it’s even worse, sometimes getting 1 second delays from a flick to the content moving.
I wanted to screen record this behaviour but the screen recorders available on sfos are terrible and tank the performance of the device while recording so the clips are not representative of the issue, I’ll try recording the screen with another camera at 120fps maybe.
Is anyone else suffering from this issue or perhaps has a solution?
I have the same steppy scrolling you descibe and I don’t think it’s a problem one could fix. This seems inherent to the scroll system because I have the same in my self-built app.
I don’t have homeassistant but I see the same sort of behaviour especially in the browser, scrolling and nothing happening for a second, scrolls not registered and general sluggishness. That’s my biggest gripe at the minute, the rest of the phone is fine.
When I experience 100% CPU for a few seconds I restart the browser. On my RPI 4GB FF starts to use swap after heavy use and the symptoms seems the same. I just restart it too.
I consider myself a script kid level not a dev. But I manage in SFOS for a decade quite well. But yeah it’s much different than smooth gold cage of the Andy.
That’s false anyway. I hope they change that text soon.
Its a natural QML/Qt quirk that ListViews are heavy lifting.
Just to explain why the lag is most obvious in the huge settings page ListView.
I am quite sure Jolla did tweak the obvious things like keeping the GPU awake and at full freq when necessary, i.e. during actively using the device.
My hunch is that any further optimization is a lot of (testing) work. And playing with the obvious governor/freq pinning etc. would worsen the situation most likely and be a waste of time.
This is about the micro studder when dragging, right? I.e. flicking is smooth but dragging is not. Maybe the touch inputs are handled in the same thread like UI updates?
From a porter experience, since this topic exists, I’ll dump my knowledge for ya:
From my experience the scrolling smoothness is hit or miss purely depending on hardware and random chance. Something is causing microstutters and nobody knows what.
We’ve once made topic on forum and discussed how gpu is idle even while doing heavy stuff on sfos so thought maybe sfos is not offloading to gpu but yeah no, it is, it’s just not doing much to require higher clock and no increasing clock does not help. Locking cpu to max freq does help.
Scrolling smoothness was great on jolla phone, on my g2/x2 they have microstutters, scrolling was exceptional on huawei p8lite for some reason lol. Most of my devices have microstuters…
Except two. Xiaomi Pad 6 (pipa) and Motorola Edge 30 Neo (miami). They both have 120Hz and scrolling is as smooth as on android.
I’ve been seeing scrolling in android/ios and every time i went “whoa” compared to sfos scrolling. The reason for the difference is not obvious by no means but quite sure it’s microstutter. on miaimi/pipa with 120Hz the first time I scrolled a list I was like “yeap, that’s it”, it’s exactly the same as android.
Can confirm these micro stutters if I scroll at certain speeds. Going slower, everything looks good. Going faster, it’s probably still there but I don’t notice it as much.
Possibly related? I ran the touch test in CSD just the other day and noticed that the trace turned into disconnected dots when I swiped faster. I wonder if touch sampling rate (and/or filtering) could lead to these micro stutters.
Overall it doesn’t bother me too much, as I normally either scroll a bit slower or flick to get kinetic scroll.
