The main (rear) camera is unable to focus correctly. The image is permanently blurry and the autofocus continuously hunts, producing an audible clicking sound.
The issue occurs immediately after opening the camera application and persists for both photos and videos.
To rule out a Sailfish Camera application issue, I also tested the camera using Open Camera under Android, where the exact same behavior occurs. This suggests the problem is not limited to the Sailfish Camera application.
The front camera and the ultrawide camera work, although their image quality appears lower than expected. The main camera is the only one affected by the autofocus problem.
PRECONDITIONS
Device updated to Sailfish OS 5.2.0.16.
No modifications to camera settings.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Open the Camera application.
Switch to the main rear camera.
Point the camera at any subject.
ACTUAL RESULT
The image remains out of focus.
Continuous autofocus hunting.
Constant audible clicking from the camera module.
Photos and videos are blurry.
EXPECTED RESULT
The main camera should autofocus normally, remain stable once focus is acquired, and capture sharp photos and videos without continuous clicking.
MODIFICATIONS
None.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Issue reproduced after updating to Sailfish OS 5.2.0.16.
Same behavior reproduced using Open Camera under Android.
Front and ultrawide cameras are functional.
The issue appears to be independent of the camera application.
Just to be 100% sure, have you tried rebooting yet? I’ve noticed problems with manual focus not actually focussing what I want it to focus, but I don’t get the continuous autofocus and clicking you describe, and pictures and videos are generally sharp (just not always sharp in the area I want).
Hello and thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately disabling AAS and trying Advanced Camera didn’t solve the problem. I’ve also rebooted the phone several times. I was hoping for a software related problem but it seems more likely to be a hardware problem
Unfortunately Advanced Camera doesn’t support the JP2 all that well yet (only ultra-wide angle cam available, glitching when changing resolutions).
That said… I cannot reproduce the issue on my JP2. Contact support?
Advanced camera 0.9.8-1.9.1 runs great on my JP2026
the only one difference is that Advanced cam saving pictures 8192x6144, native app 4096x3072 for main lens
Ah, the behavior is different to 10iii where you have buttons for each rear camera. “Switching” front and rear cameras changes the rear cameras. Again what learned.
[edit]Sorry for derailing…[/edit]
For me it looks like the firmware issue (an Autofocus control algorithm, which is a part of the internal image signal processor firmware). Probably the camera module and it’s lens actuator are “out of the average distribution” and the AF algorithm can’t handle it properly
Don’t know for sure, but I have lived in understanding that things related to camera stack are open source. If that is something else, then it might not be
If ISP sources (including sources of imaging control algorithms) are available/open - it is an open source. But usually the ISP vendor’s code provided as a binary, so I will be very surprised if it is not a case here.
Probably it is a question of the ISP algorithms tuning, this is where probably Jolla’s team can do something (assuming it is not just a vendor’s default tuning “as is”)
