Jolla Mind2 hardware update: a deep dive with Sami Pienimäki

Get ready to explore the inner workings of Jolla Mind2. In our latest hw update, Sami from team Jolla, takes you on a tour of the Mind2: https://youtu.be/Eub8sQ0LRpM?feature=shared

  • Custom PCB: learn about the custom-designed printed PCB that forms the heart of Mind2.
  • Cooling system: discover how the cooling system effectively dissipates heat generated by the powerful processor, ensuring optimal performance even during demanding AI tasks.
  • Expandable storage: explore the expandable storage options available with Mind2, including the pre-installed 1TB SSD in the Community Edition and the additional M.2 slot for future upgrades.
  • Connectivity and ports: get a closer look at the various ports and connectors on the Mind2 device, including Ethernet, USB-C, USB-A, and the potential for adding a 4G/5G modem.

Don’t forget, the Jolla Mind2 Community Edition is a limited-time offer with a special pre-order price of €489 (that’s 30% off the regular price of €699!). Once the first batch is gone, the price goes up. Pre-order now and secure your Mind2 at the best possible price!

We want your feedback!

We’re excited about Jolla Mind2 and want to hear what you think. Whether you’re already a fan, considering a pre-order, or just curious, your input is valuable. Take our quick survey and help us shape the future of Mind2.

Nice video. Thanks for sharing.

No separate display connection port? So we always need a USB-C-Hub with HDMI/DP with it?

Wouldn’t one just SSH into it, like any headless server?

I’m still a bit curious to the use-case for this, I can’t really figure out anything I’d want to use this for.
Can someone give a couple of examples?

Does it even have hdmi, my understanding was it’s an api box you call remotely and maybe has telnet/ssh, hdmi licences cost quite a lot so would not be surprised if it’s just for remote accessing and never planned as a standalone plug in keyboard and monitor kinda thing

You can feed it your personal data without worrying it ends up in googol/m$ cloud, whether AI there is anything useful that translates your data into helpful AI-assistant type of thing is still in the air
Edit: hopefully you could just reuse this as a 1TB selfhosted nextcloud thing once all AI hype dies down (and you can then install nextcloud AI assistant ^^)

Sounds good yeah, I’ve already got NextCloud setup on a Ryzen 5600G atm, along with some other tasks; it does automatically tag my files and such with Recognize, all locally as well. But maybe this can do more, or with better hardware acceleration; if the community here can contribute with more “AI Agents” perhaps it could form the core of my home automation which I don’t currently have at all

Why does a server need LEDs and a touch interface?
Jolla shop also says “Voice-Activated” which is a strange feature for a server.

LEDs make it look cool, touch probably for one touch pairing, it has microphone???

Voice activation is not strange, existing products like Homey are very similar, besides home automation it could drive speakers in a smart speaker kind of way.

RGB LEDs can be used for, as far as my imagination goes:

  • Show the devices temperature from green to red as it heats up
  • Show that it’s “thinking” on your last voice prompt
  • Show boot procedure or error codes like old BIOS’es
  • Show you where the device is in the dark if it refuses to light up your home lights and you want to reboot it :stuck_out_tongue:
  • React to the music being played for ambiance

The touch will be slightly more niche, perhaps for reboots, WiFi / Bluetooth pairings, interrupting procedures, etc…

Interesting idea. Some mix of a smart (voice) assistant, a smart loudspeaker like Alexa and a home server/NAS.

There’s now a new dedicated website: https://www.jollamind2.com/

It says “privacy-first AI Computer”. Not “personal computer”. And further:
“serving as your personal assistant, private server, and communication hub”

So, it’s a mix of a smart loudspeaker and a server.

There is a 10 €/month subscription bundled with the device. Considering that the device is a stand alone device (and thus not a cloud front end) what services are tied to the subscription? Would it be possible to use mind2 without subscription?

What about selling new/updated agents (AI-models/algorithms) one by one?

No, USB-C to HDMI adapter needed.

I thought it was funny when the Youtube subtitles said the prototype had a “chump wire” :grinning: (jump wire)

Also someone commented that Sami was “not very passionate” about the product. Bit of a cultural disconnect there I think. I’d rather have a level headed Finn talking about a product instead of a “passionate” hype merchant American

Yes the world is flooded with phone chargers but a normal phone charger won’t deliver 45-50W. If they don’t want to include a suitable charger by default they should at least offer a compatible one with the order at extra cost. The RPi Foundation probably makes quite a bit of money from selling “official” chargers.

Still, I won’t be buying one but hope it goes well for Jolla (better than C2 anyway :grimacing: ) I’ve spent over 300 euro on a 1 year old X10V which I can’t really use yet, so my gadget budget is used up :upside_down_face:

I actually wasn’t sure if Sami was still with Jolla after the Jollyboys buyout. Good to see him again. There wasn’t a post on the Jolla blog since Feb 2023 until the recent one about Prague Sailathon. And only two posts in the 12 months before that. I hope they’ll make a big fuss about Sailfish 5.0!

Great, so usb-c is carrying display[port] too:)!
