I get it it’s the best way to build a community give them fake karma points or whatever, but it’s also really annoying as hell, woohoo you just liked a post/mentioned someone in a post/someone mentioned you in a post, have a badge, ffs, I’m not a kitten
I’m new to the forum and I find the incessant badgering[0] tone-deaf[1] and mildly insulting. Is SailfishOS targeted at simpletons and five-year-olds? No? Then why do you treat me as one?
[0] pun fully intended
[1] my notifications are a mix of patting on the head for “first emoji” etc on one hand and low-key accusations of spamming for linking to OpenRepos, which is really ironic because Jolla owes my purchase of SailfishOS to that site
There a complete dose. I just earned a badge for liking the posts above, its almost like its trolling me. Roman is spot on with the 5 year olds commment
Please don’t conflate the idiosyncrasies of the Forum software (Discourse) with Sailfish OS.
Might be because I’m still new so I don’t know how longer they will go on and if they’ll become cumbersome in the future, but right now I find them to be a fun way to judge how much activity there has been on the forum prior to my account, looking at the nunber of people who already got that badge before me.
When I’m under the 100s I find it amusing!
And it’s not like the notifications are intrusive, they are well distinguished from likes, replies etc. so I can easily ignore them.
It will be a different story if the more I engage the more badges I get, but for now it seems like I’ll have a relatively large influx of badges at the start which will then taper down the longer I engage.
If it works that way in the future it might even feel special to get a badge I never encountered in 1+ years of use!
Discourse does provides a couple of settings for notifications, but perhaps not as fine-grained as you would like.
To pause notifications, click on your avatar in the top right corner, then select the generic “Person icon” at the bottom right of the pop-up. Finally, toggle Pause notifications to suit your preference.
Clicking Preferences in that same pop-up takes you to your profile with a few more options:
- The
Preferencesmain tab →Notificationssub tab lets you set how often likes result in a notification - The
Preferencesmain tab →Emailssub tab lets you configure which email notifications you want
Just get all badges and then you won’t get any more notifications ![]()
Unfortunately you can earn some badges multiple times, and you still get notifications for those ![]()
