Is there a future for SailfishOS?

i can confirm that this trick works well, I can now open the Aurora page for a specific Android app - thanks!

Aptoide can be safely used if you stick to the APKs that are offered in the official store and always check the source.

I was curious and looked for Jolla Oy’s company data via Finnish “Business information system”; abbreviation “YTJ”.
https://tietopalvelu.ytj.fi/yritys/2399817-6

I found out that Jolla is in “restructuring/re-organization” as of since 21st June 2023.
I do hope that SFOS finds it’s way alive through that…but if I needed to guess, then AppSupport gets boost and SFOS get axed.

No news though about replacing the russian part of ownership in the company…atleast I haven’t seen anywhere. Must be quite complex task to accomplish due to the sanctions…

This makes me a bit nervous. I had the first 770 outside Nokia, and developed some popular software there. It felt like we were living in the future. Fast forward a few years, Elop killed the N9 and Jolla became the only interesting alternative.

Right now, one can perhaps run an AOSP distribution such as LineageOS. But it is a house of cards. Sooner or later, Google will pull the plug and it will become impossible to run libre Android. Besides, the userland is a bit frankenstein-ish.

I hope that SFOS stays alive. Strategically, it is absurd for Europe not to have a open mobile OS.

Doesn’t app support need an OS to run on?

Sure, but that doesn’t have to be even vaguely related to SFOS.

By that i believe you mean the GUI stuff right.

Again i can’t see the value in AppSupport on its own. To me it would make more sense for Jolla to offer a complete OS and HW for the car MFGs and app support being a nice to have extra.

But i suspect Jolla has done their market research. :person_shrugging:

No, i mean just about everything that makes it SFOS. I.e. AppSupport can presumably run on any Linux distro with very minor requirements. All car manufacturers already have some sort of infotainment - good, bad, bought or otherwise. So given that… presumably very few are in the market for an entire OS.

They seem that a few have been choosing android automotive for their in car tablets lately. (ie volvo, honda)

Where did you get the restructuring info from?

It’s in the link @lumen provided. It has a field indicating the company has entered “restructuring proceedings”. They also seem to be late on tax payment.

In addition @veskuh seems to have leaved Jolla regarding his last post/toot on mastodon.

People always come and go in any company.

Really? He was the one that announced Sailfish X on blog

Europe needs it indeed, don’t know why they continue ignoring it

Build it and they will come.

In other words we need a proper polished product that will attract people to it. Not something provided by a government or relying on a EU paycheck.

SFOS is the best we have albeit its being held back by a variety of problems.

Major point in holding back is the unfortunate owner structure at the moment, an issue that could be repaired by funding from EU

The way i see it is that SFOS had been held back long before the Russian invasion to Ukraine. Anyway.

Yeah, especially given how much research funding is dumped in nonsensical things.

ROI would be immediate, non-spying phones and less hardware waste.

Not quite sure about that. To get a return of investment, people have to buy the phone first.
Modern smartphones came a long way for the average consumer and there are some things and features that consumers expect to find even in low end smartphones.
It’s not that easy to convince people to embrace inconvenience for more privacy.
