Hello, I did a quick search and could not find a similar topic, so apologies if this has been requested before. (I guess this has been asked a million time before)
I use Vivaldi web browser, they have integrated Proton VPN straight into the browser.
Is that something Sailfish or Jollaboys could do the same. It could also help the revenue, if they got a few euro a month pr subscriber?
I understand you guys love the way Sailfish is now, but it does not attract the normal user. They need simplicity. If Sailfish OS could get like the “Proton Package”, VPN, disk storage, email and so on, integrated and get that synchronization in place when you first boot it up.
Or team up with any other company offering a good solution and revenue.
Create a new respo alongside the original, that has those thing in place, With an appstore for the native and Android apps.
I do not know how difficult this could be, but most people here is not “normal people”, we are “special interested people” If my wife could install it and start using it with out problems, you guys have reached the normal people
There is a VPN section in Settings, so adding it there might be a start.
Or is that still too complicated for the “normal” user to enter VPN credentials there?
Yes, I use Vivaldi android app. no problem
I used them as an example, that Vivaldi has integrated proton to get a secure web browsing and to potential revenue.
They need money, and it would be a nice way to get some cash flow, we all can fix it so the jollaboys do not get any revenue, we have so many options on the free marked.
I was thinking, if they offered the like “Proton package”(or something similar) on statup either log in or register, that it would offer extra to new users and revenue for the OS.
That is how I support vivaldi and through donations.
It’s certainly a good idea to have ‘Proton’ as an option when adding an account, which then logs you in to all relevant services at the same time (and adds the VPN credentials), similar to how it works when adding e.g. a Microsoft or Google account.
I don’t know if it would print money, but it would make Sailfish quicker to set up, for sure. And I assume there’s a reasonably sized group of (potential) Sailfish users with Proton accounts.
I want to have freedom in creating my mobile environment. I don’t want “complex packages”. That’s what big players do, that’s why I left them and ended up with SFOS. I freely decide (yes, even with the necessary effort) what components I have on my mobile. By the way, I also have a proton account and used the gateway on Linux, but only when it was free. This would also threaten “complex packages”, subordination to the provider.
Should be no problem in having both!?
If like you, you want it barebone and set it up like you want, choose “No” when installing and create the experience you want
If you click yes, the a more “Complex Package” as you say, people can get that also. If they team up with Proton for example, they can create a secure environment for people, make it easier to emigrate. Sailfish OS brand it self as a European secure option.
All companies need revenue.
If I can get the easier option, I would go for that. Now in my life, I have my own small company, I work all day, everyday, the time I have left I use to run after my kids and wife. I do not have the time to create and maintain my own environment anymore. Life was much easier when I just worked 0700 to 1700.
Now it easier for me to pay for this service. ←added
I meant on install, make it easy, make it easier.
I remember first time setting SailfishOS up, you needed to be special interested
everything can be done. Just do this, write that, install this via this, pull that, patch this. I loved to do that before.
But if you are going to be a European alternative, why not also create something that attract casual users? Simplicity
Jolla with their restricted resources are more than busy with the absolute basics, which is getting SFOS running on the new phone platform. Don’t expect anything more from them.
If you want more, you as a part of the community have to engage in creating the additions.
Regarding browser with integrated VPN: I personally don’t like that. Browser is browser and VPN is VPN. One job, one tool.
