It would be very nice to have the possibilty in the Sailfish OS native message app to chat via an e-mail account, similar as delta chat (Delta Chat, decentralized secure messenger - Delta Chat) does.
Delta Chat is FOSS so this should not be too complex. The Android version of Delta Chat works perfect on SFOS Appsupport. A native SFOS would be great!
Seems thereās an Ubuntu Touch version in qml, maybe it can be built if not directly at least as a Qt5.15 app as Angelfishā¦
I fully agree, native would be great. The decentralised thought of DCh is really super. Used DCh years ago but switched to Telegram and Signal because of native Fernschreiber and Whisperfish. So ānativenessā of an app is an good reason to use it.
Thank you all, a native solution built in to the message app would be like the imessage feature on iOS devices, but even better, as every communication partner can be reached.
The message app is conceptually a front-end to Telepathy.
So if there was a telepathy plugin that would be somewhat feasible.
But TP is pretty much dead everywhere except SFOS, a separate, native client seems the most promising.
Now someone must write or port it.
Was googling on Delta Chat and SFOS in hopes of it being native when the new Jolla phone arrives but this seems to be the most recent post about it. It seems no native app was made for it?
Not yet, but maybe someone is working on a native app. Integration into the messaging app seems not to be possible.
OT: On one hand, wondering if Jolla can afford maintaining Telepathy themselves.
On the other, I didnāt find any alternative framework.
Do you know any āaliveā alternative ?
There is this: https://openrepos.net/content/kan/arcanechat-tui in openrepos, no idea how well it works. Maybe this is sufficient or someone is eager to build a GUI around it
Delta Chat for Android works very fine unter Sailfish Appsupport. You can download the apk from the Delta.chat webpage directly and install manually, or download from F-Droid.
GitHub - vgisclabs/deltachat-touch looks like QT is not the issue, but rust. the core of the backend appears to be in rust.
EDIT: I think the ācanonicalā is actually lk108/deltatouch: Decentralized, secure messenger app, powered by the chatmail core library. Fediverse: @deltatouch@social.tchncs.de - Codeberg.org still, same point.
Looks like rust 1.77, we have support for that I hope?
But anyway, mixing qml with rust is probably only for @rubdos and @direc85 to understand ;D
Although, that qml bit has already been done in the deltatouch version. Itās just ābuildingā the rust bits that I have not desire to do.
IIRC itās 1.72 upstream at the moment, with 1.89 or 1.82 coming soon (GitHub - sailfishos/rust at rust-1.89 and WIP: [rust] update to 1.82.0. by dcaliste Ā· Pull Request #24 Ā· sailfishos/rust Ā· GitHub respectively).
thank you Joboe for this useful suggestion
Native
Similar to but not Deltachat
Integrated in Sailfish OS messaging
Having at least one integrated secure messaging/ would be a major sails argument which I am lacking to push anyone I know to Sailfish OS.
I donāt think there is any spirit for this at Jolla. They seem to āforgetā such a heritage fearture. I speculate that by this way they canāt be held responsible for enabling more secure communication.
From Deltachat iOS:
merlinux GmbH has identified itself as a trader for this app and confirmed that this product or service complies with European
Union law.
So the safest thing to comply to EU law (whatever) is to offer a Sailfish OS with ānothing to doā.
After 13yrs people overhere may still facepalm reply to a loyal simple user 's demand to Jolla for one, just one integrated messenger, to elegantly expand mobile calling with replies such as :
ādo you have any idea how much work that is?ā
Work has a price. But I think thereās deliberate avoidance.
Exactly with this kind of orguments I am trying always to push XMPP integration within OS accounts. With full supported OMEMO and maybe PGP, would be very nice to have voice and video calls too, and offcause MultiUserChats (groups).
In some of last community meetings it was at least decided to opensource that part of Settings app, so community devs can maybe help here
stay with hope!
Why yet another chat solution?
Why not rather focus on continued development on something we already have?
XMPP, Mattermost, Matrix, Signal and/or Nextcloud Talk - there are clients for all of these, and Matrix and Nextcloud Talk both have quite a momentum in Europe at the moment.
I use the Mattermost, Signal and Sailtrix clients every single day and would love to see these app more actively developed with new functionality rather then jumping on yet another chat solutionā¦
Why not? DeltaChat uses mail servers - you donāt even need a new account. It is just another possibility.
Well, Matrix is not a simple solution for the not tech savvy and Signal is USA based. What are the apps in Sailfish for XMPP and Mattermost?
