The OS isn’t there yet for the common folk wanting to use all the social crap. Or even for a more profesional user. Hell its not even there for the more geek user.
And the hardware sucks.
Yes it would be good if all those could be fixed but it would require a huge amount of money. And noone cares and most are happy with android.
I think there is a niche for a privacy friendly OS. They just would have to go another approach. Building a foundation like Mozilla or an alliance and getting all the privacy aware actors into one boat. SFOS, Volla, Threema, Proton, Mozilla, UBtouch, Plasma Mobile, Blackberry,…
This website offers all kinds of European tech except smartphone OS’es:
european-alternatives.eu .
Only two OS’es have a chance to become more popular: Volla and Murena, because they offer phones for everyone.
GrapheneOS could be an option too, but this uses Pixel devices only.
To my regret beautiful Sailfish is not suitable for everyone. I have said this multiple times: it is irrealistic to expect that every consumer is able to tinker, or wants to tinker or has time to tinker. The C2 was disappointing because it wasn’t ready and because of the low quality of the hardware.
Sailfish could have made a request for funding by the Horizon project. Fairphone and Murena did. But Horizon will not support tech that is for a privileged group of people only.
Jolla could have coöperated with Fairphone, yet this didn’t work. Still don’t know why.
Jolla’s C2 is made in Europe!
That is a great cooperation between Finland and TĂĽrkiye.
If it sells well, Jolla and Reeder may make a C3 with higher end hardware next time.
the EU should stop “investing” in anything, it’s stolen money (taxes). either the market demands a 3rd OS or it does not. Don’t use my extorted money.
Googles android project … is open source but still google’s
you can do some read on the cookie replacement thingi started by google, how friendly that is, as part of chromium which is just another open source domination machine like android
“With the official release of HarmonyOS NEXT (5.0) in ten years, 20,000+ HarmonyOS native applications and meta services on the shelves, more than 7.2 million HarmonyOS developers, and more than 1 billion ecological devices.”
Here lies the problem of SFOS, ok, we cannot compare it with a multibillion dollar Tech-company from China, but in a few years they brought up their own OS, but with an army of developpers, and as long as SFOS is missing those crowds of programmers, it will not be able to do a big leap. This or finding sponsors for the missing part parts to be improved, and then with a completed OS, the users would come by themself…
