Idea: create a "report an error" -mechanism right on the UI of Sailfish OS / C2 phone

So also a “common” user could report their shortcomings right away, straight forward, without even creating an account here.

It would surely speed up the development and the devs of Sailfish OS on C2 might label certain reports as “Urgent” or “Minor”, or something else.

How about that? :writing_hand:

Counter-idea: bring back the downvotes from TJC so people can easily show when users are going off the rails.

With “ideas” like this you cannot possibly be a Linux user as your username would suggest. Not a great look using someone else’s trademark either.

You do realize the “account here” is the same as the Jolla account needed on your phone?

Also; the “Bugger” app already exists for this - but you probably didn’t bother finding out that either.
Not that i condone it - since it seems to attract low-quality bug reports.

No it’s not, i noticed that this applies under the Jolla’s Blog comment section. Here an account is created separate.

The point of this idea is to make things more convenient OOTB just there as you start up the phone the first time and get around using it, spotting troubles.

Separate terms and conditions and some database entries perhaps; but the credentials are most definitely the same. I never set up anything else - and someone who bought a phone “account included” definitely got access to my PMs here with the seller. Note how the login goes through the same https://account.jolla.com as anything else.

Making it too convenient just attracts garbage.

No, i don’t think so. The user base is so very small at this point. There would not be a problem. Maybe later.

I mean, why not make things more accessible for more people? A new user has a phone in ones hand, and the person could just put forward a trouble one has experienced.

I did try this, but it surely did not go this way you described. So, i had to create an all new account here.

There’s a reason the built-in error reporting tools you find on computers only send log dumps when e.g. an application crashes, so there is (or should be) something in the logs. The errors you’re talking about are features that are missing or not fully working, which would require user input to clarify what isn’t working (correctly or at all), and that would lead to 100 nonsensical reports every five minutes:

  1. THIS NO WORK
  2. NO WORK
  3. WHEN U FIX
  4. I H8 U
  5. FIX NOW
  6. NO WORKING
  7. FIX
  8. U SUCK
  9. JIO SUPPORT WHEN
  10. WHEN U FIX!!!
  11. I NEED FIX!!!
  12. NOT WORK!!!

As several people have now repeatedly said: if you want to report a bug, use the template.

Nice to see that many of your posts liked by one and same user.

Have you some experience in software development?

More reporters would come due to this “report an error” -mechanism, and no need to do it here. Straight to the developers conveniently.

This is an idea. There are similar ways in Plasma (desktop) to report and share.

This would be the starting point for a commoner user having the phone in hand with Sailfish OS. Tap on the UI (similar to the Tutorial button on the main interface.

Yes, but very little and personal “attempt to” level. My skill would not help here. This is why is see that the geniuses of Jolla could see the aim to polishing information sent to them right from the UI (with even advanced information in tertiary style possibility - if some knowledge in coding there; “report advanced”).

There exist already. It called Bugger. You can report bugs with a template, which has all the relevant data for the developer. Anything else, (what the user think or personally want to say) is not relevant for bugfixing.

Bugger is not available in the official store but only via third-party sources. You need to find that app first. Ideally it’s either pre-installed or easily installable in the Store.

Also, it currently lacks the ability of extracting and attaching coredumps which often contain the vital information in case of crashes. There actually exists a tool already, but it’s internal and not public. Coredumps are a sensitive matter too and cannot be made public in the forum.

I heard that both issues (Bugger into Store, tool for coredump extraction) are in progress.

This is pleasant to hear! It indicates that Jolla is aware and aims for user friendliness also in error reporting.

Bugger! author here:

I thought it was a neat idea, and as Lipstick actually supports this, I implemented something like it as a Top Menu Action:

Nothing special, it just launches the app.
This is going to be in Bugger! v0.9.12 probably.

Thanks to @fooxl whose app ‘Zutun’ showed me how to do that.

As for Harbour (Jolla Store), as weird as it sounds Bugger! does a lot of things that are not allowed in a harbour app.
So it’s not likely it will show up there soon.

Next planned features inspired by this thread:

  • remove/lowercase any CAPSLOCKED words
  • remove words like urgent, critical, and so on
  • add a priority switch to the UI that does nothing

Remove possibly yeah or in style ***** but this would potentially lead to lock this helpful string, dunno. I mean capsing is not that serious of a deal breaker :face_with_hand_over_mouth:
