Hi all!
I have been using Threema for more many years now. I bought it through the Threema Shop and downloaded and installed via an apk. In the beginning Threema informed me about new versions and I could download them through the app.
When I switched to Aurora as my app store I had the chance to update through that but both ways stopped working. Aurora shows me that there is an update but it will not download. When I get the update via the Threema Shop the apk will not install, telling me that the new apk would be a downgrade and that is not possible.
So what is the right way to update Threema?
I am using an X II with SFOS 4.6.0.15.
Thanks for your help!
They have an Fdroid repository for threema libre
Thanks for the answers.
@leon This is where I download the new apks. But when I want to install them I get the message that the new apk would be a downgrade and cannot be installed.
I use the FileBrowser app to install. Could I try to install the apk another way?
I also tried to install the apk using Terminal
devel-su apkd-install Threema-5.8.1.apk
On the phone I gat the message that it is installing and than the error about the downgrade.
I tried Threma Libre but felt it is not a replacement, yet.
I’s say, backup your chats, un-install Threema and then install it from F-Droid and restore the backup, see:

From my experience, I thought the main difference of Threema (Playstore) and Threema Libre (Open Source / F-Droid) is the missing Google libraries, hence notifications will work differntly. Beyond that, I haven’t seen any functional difference.
So, I don’t see why Threema Libre cannot replace the Playstore version.

I understand your problem like i am also having it. If you download the official APK from Threema, it says you should downgrade. Through Aurora Store the Hostserver csn apparently not be reached. And also if i try to open the APK file with Uptodown store nothing happens. In the past i somehow managed to get the APK installed, but don’t remember how. But i also believe, Aurora store would install it if the server would be found, what doesn’t seem to be the case. And lately i was able to install the APK just fine, from the point on when a newer APK was available… Also quite a mysterium for me…
the app “obtainium” in f-droid claims to be able to upgrade apps from third party sources, maybe you can aupgrade your threema using this
I use Threema on my SF Phone since 2017. Threema Libre is a perfect alternative and just works. FDroid is your friend. You can always back up your data localy, deinstall and reinstall.

Thanks for all your input. I’ll guess I have to take some time and do the switch to Threema Libre.

So its not really intuitive like you have to backup, desinstall and reinstall the app, but then you can install the latest version
And who should care about your intuition? Use the FOSS version on FDroid or Google Services or check at the Threema website.
If you have to reinstall, you will need your license.
Yes that Threema practically sends by mail. One search, copy n paste!
I just wanted to tell the threadholder how you can use the latest version of Threema, as Aurora store does not update the app
