Home screen app grid (minimized apps) 3x2 instead 2x2 for new Jolla phone as well?

Today I visited JollaHQ in Tampere and had a chance to see, feel and shortly test the new Jolla phone. I am very much impressed about it even though it was a pre-production model. I could go on and on about it, but I can’t—and I won’t. We should wait until the final product is released. One thing I can say, the screen of the new Jolla phone is amazing and Jolla crew is amazing, hard working and busy.

Coming back to my questions, I would like to ask which is your preference regarding the home screen app grid? Would you be fine with 2x2 big tiles as in the C2 or would you prefer 3x2 larger ones for new Jolla phone, similar as we have in the Xperia devices.

I do personally feel more comfortable with 3x2 larger tiles as it seems to me like waste of space in the C2. Mostly, I run >5 apps anyway but for good look and feel, it’s sometimes nice to have the larger tiles. Luckily the new Jolla isn’t that huge as the C2 but I believe it might look better with 3x2 anyway.

Please let me know what your preference is:

I suspect we are talking minimized apps here.

Given that the phone is large the grid and placement should be adapted to the reach of the thump -if the goal is to maintain some sort of one hand reachability-

So whoever is solving the problem better solve for that.

What’s this thing with “x2”?
Is the question 2 or 3 columns of app covers as a minimum? (Because surely dimensions are given as XxY?)

But how does this then make 3x2 larger than 2x2 as your post describes it?
Being a tallphone i definitely prefer a 2x3 layout if it can be made to fit reasonably after subtracting the notch.

I see i voted 2x2 now - i blame potentially backwards dimensions for that.

There is also a patch to enforce large covers that makes the app view scrollable for numbers bigger than four, maybe that solves your problem

I’d assume that – like in every good matrix – dimensions are given as number of rows x number of columns.

Two screenshots from Jolla C2. For that phone there is space for third row.

Thanks all! Just to compare Xperia 10III vs. Jolla C2.

We could take this to this week’s Community meeting on 26th March 2026 ? Would somebody like to summarize?

I’m curious of the patch. Could you indicate where I can possibly find it?

The patch is called “Force cover size”, it can be found in the patch manager web catalogue

Edit: Are you familiar with patch manager?

In general the number of covers that fit the home screen depend on the aspect ratio. For the 21:9 and 16:9 aspect ratios a reasonable coverage without unused space can be achieved, for the upcoming 19.5:9 the coverage would result in something between 3x2 and 2x2, meaning half covers. The only way to circumvent this would be to change the ratio of the single covers, which I personally would very much dislike.

either that, or to shrink the covers entirely(?)
personally, I don’t care too much; 3x2 would be better, but 2x2 is fine.

And is Web Catalog down (probably wrong thread)? I would love to install it…

Would be cool to have always 2 big ones on top and others small like 4 columns und endless rows with scrolling option
Those 2 big ones I would use for clock and weather.

Sadly, Web Catalog is down for me. Installed it from OpenRepos, but I cannot activate it. i run 5.0.0.76 on one phone and 5.0.0.77 on the other.
