Helmsman - a new semi-native Home-Assistant companion app

Ooh, I’m not sure I’d entrust Helmsman with something that critical just yet. As you may have seen, the location is a bit unreliable still. What I would do is either bind the alarm to whether your phone is on the home wifi or put a direct “disarm alarm" button on the app cover or events view.

And yes, @raketti is right - the time is the interval after which the app refreshes the location on its’ own, but if another app gets it before that, it should use that fix. Note: “should”. I haven’t tested it very thoroughly yet.

I will do some testing.

There’s multiple new versions available with fixes and changes here:

I wanted to put it on OpenRepos but it’s readonly right now due to the recent CVE things. I’ll update it again once that’s resolved.

Anyway, there’s the button press/hold/double press fix, @MrHappy’s layout fix (which turned out to be mostly a reverse proxy socket opening issue), @raketti ‘s notch padding fix, location improvements, and a whole lot of other fixes of various scale.

And finally, I realized the info on the cover was largely useless. Now it shows the current location (home/not_home/zone) and if external/internal adresses are defined, it shows a status icon about which it’s connected to. What do you guys think: what else would be actually relevant info to show there? Or was the previous version better (in which case I could of course add another setting to go back to that).

Maps working now, but zoom not possible.

Oh yeah that was one of the “various fixes” I didn’t remember. It worked before if entities were directly defined, now it also works with “everything”.

Zoom should work but you need to use the little + and - buttons in the bottom right corner - detecting gestures would be difficult because the container the map sits in could be scrollable itself (I guess it could work on a map-only dashboard…) but then also making the map load tiles smooth enough when panning and zooming is a task that’s out of scope for this app at the moment. That said, I’m working on some map based apps as well, so maybe once I’ve got it all figured out there, I can borrow it into this app as well

Zoom is kind of useless when you have multiple people and they’re not in the same location.
Zoom zooms in on the center, where there is no one there.

I know. But zoom out can be handy (if all the people are close to each other), and if you can zoom out, you need to be able to zoom back in  But yeah, the full screen map definitely needs proper interactions at some point.

There’s a new version available on github again, with location improvements. I had LLM analyze how the official Android companion app handles location and tried to implement similar behaviour while keeping the location presets.
