From Xperia 10ii to Jolla 2: Will one be wow’d?

Correct me if I’m wrong on this first part: Sailfish on the Xperia 10ii is a pretty nice experience since Sony did their open platform job regarding the hardware — basically everything works like it’s supposed to. Having only owned an original Jolla-1 TOH and then this Xperia 10ii, I think I’ve only experienced pretty good hardware compatibility in my sfos journey. And I hope it’s going to continue that way into the Jolla-2 this summer.

On the 10ii I’ve verified that the android apps I need/want will work. I’m really happy. I’ve even developed an app to read the battery level of my VESC PEV via bluetooth (because BT and android don’t play nice) so I can really leave behind iOS and Android as much as possible when the Jolla-2 lands.

But the big asterisk is that when I launch some of these Android apps in the 10ii, they take a loooong time to open (NY Times app, Bundesliga app, I’m looking at you.). And often the apps that do eventually open — they bog down and crash after some use. The 10ii is pretty wimpy hardware by almost any standards. Sooo, what I am wondering is. Will a Jolla-2 with the standard pre-order big memory and big storage provide better performance and stability compared to the 10ii? I mean I assume it will, but I have a degree in French Lit not engineering, so it feels a lot like guessing.

I haven’t yet seen any public benchmarks for the actual Jolla Phone, but just looking at the benchmark results for the chipset used in the device it seems to have at least 2x or 3x the raw CPU performance compared to the Snapdragon used in Xperia 10 II (and in some areas the difference is much greater still).

Together with the bigger memory this must translate into a very significant performance difference with real-life applications, so yes, you should expect all your apps to open in a fraction of the time you’re now seeing on your Sony.

all we need is a useable browser, the J2 can be 10 times faster than the X10II but still unusable without a modern gecko- or chromium based up to date browser supporting extensions.

There’s a big difference between 10 II and III in speed launching and using Android apps.
Purely based on that, J2 should be a big leap from 10 II in performance.
If j2 gets optimized properly plus the fact that we won’t have to deal with Sony blobs, I would expect I a big performance boost and the overall experience to feel much smoother with 90hz.

But we can only assume until we get the device in our hands and give it time for a proper adaptation.

The biggest flaw of the Xperia 10 II is its RAM size which means the phone is next to unusable when Android app support is active. More RAM means better caching, so apps should load faster even if the CPU is no high end type.

As a step between adopt this guide (be careful, 10ii has less Ram and Memory than the mentioned 10iii). Your phone will act faster after that.

I do recommend that mod - My x10III feels buttersmooth. No issues after upgrading too.

When researching just now, I saw in that other thread that someone had done it on their 10ii. I decided to try it with 3GB of ZRAM and not 4. It makes a big difference. Thanks for giving me the idea/courage to try it.

Not only does help me read the news on the stupid huge NYT site/app, it also help me feel less self-conscious using the Swedish ‘Swish’ payment system at the till in the shops. Transaction times are down from 60 seconds to 10 seconds (going back and forth between Swish and BankID). I <3 my non-apple, non-google, non-debit card transactions.

Downside: Now I really can’t wait for the Jolla-2.
