Jesus’s sainted underpants! You’re the nth person saying I’m being unreasonable after two months of radio silence.

I guess I just go fuck myself.

Yes, sending more spam definitely will help to unclog the email queue, have you tried sending more emails?

Worth a try

First impressions, sadly, are not about most people but about the first people you encounter. And chances are, even if we in general were the most helpful bunch there is in the whole world, if the first you encounter are people telling you it’s already been solved and you should search the whole internet to find it, or that you shouldn’t even bother the company even though you’re a paying customer, well, people are not gonna think we’re a helpful bunch.

You are talking about people conpletely new to the concept of human society, I guess?

You are right. There should at least be one place in the whole of the internet welcoming and open to people that start a conversation with complaints. A place where others happily find the solutions for other peoples problems to spare them using the search function.

I don’t want to say too much on this, just one suggestion. One can respond also critically in a if not friendly than at least neutral tone. Sarcasm or ridicule does not add much value to a community forum. If there is nothing constructive to add, consider adding nothing.

Actually, the issue is very simple. There is no need for fighting or noise.

Our friend @fravaccaro is right. In one of his articles, there was a very beautiful sentence that made me smile: “We are turning passion into poison.”

Definitely, all of us here have excitement and passion. Even if, from time to time, we may get angry about things being ignored, this place can truly be in a state of peace.

Just as this company does not forget the history it came from with MeeGo, and always introduces itself by mentioning MeeGo, we should also remember that when Nokia sold us products all those years, there were always two people shaking hands in the phone startup animations. Do you think that was for no reason? Of course it was not.

In the same way, we need to show that kind of friendship and bond of love in this forum too.

Sarcasm? I do not understand what you want to say here. We could seriously improve this place taking over the burden of our new members.

@jojomen I agree with you. This is not a support forum, and seeing the same questions repeatedly is frustrating, but we cannot expect newcomers to understand all the nuances. As a community, we need to face the fact that basic questions WILL come if Jolla gains popularity (as everyone here hopes), it’s a tradeoff we have to make. A month or so ago, LTT voiced his frustration about how the Linux community can sometimes be obnoxious and hostile to newbies, and I tend to agree with that. If you want a product to succeed, that success brings inexperienced users, there’s no way around it.
Individuals getting frustrated with newbies isn’t going to help anyone. If a post annoys you (as in you generic member), you’re always free to just ignore it, replying with sarcasm or being passive-aggressive shouldn’t be an option. We’ve all been new to something, and if we stuck around, it’s (partly) because we felt welcome. We should really give that same opportunity to others…some may stay in the end, and some may go.

@moralcoral Or maybe it is that deep. The WP community was obnoxious, and I would have thought twice about asking for help because I’m not thrilled about internet brawls. We need casual users if we want to keep the boat afloat; unfortunately, casual users ask questions that might seem trivial to an enthusiast, but daunting to them.
If I, as a casual user, see a community being hostile toward newcomers, I might refrain from asking questions. Consequently, I won’t be enticed to get more involved, learn more, and possibly contribute, and without contribution, a community dies. Or do we want to keep Sailfish OS all to ourselves? I don’t think it should be up to us to decide who will or won’t have a good time with it.
In the end, you are a user, not Jolla’s lawyer. It shouldn’t be up to you to decide whether someone is causing damage to the company. I agree that people who complain just for the sake of complaining are disruptive, but there are moderators in place for that. In this very thread, while other users were being aggressive toward the OP, Jolla employees clearly saw they were lacking in communication and reacted accordingly. It seems to me that Jolla is perfectly capable of handling the situation without anyone stepping in on their behalf.

@filip.k I agree that everyone should bear that responsibility; it’s not a weight that should fall solely on your shoulders. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always go smoothly, and my reason for commenting here is to try and raise awareness about it.
In the Telegram group, as moderators, we do need to call for order from time to time, rarely, to be honest, but we do. It’s not up to me to tell you how to moderate here; I just wanted to give my two cents, and my two cents is that toxicity doesn’t help a community grow.
Of course, you are free to agree or disagree with my view. But I’ve been around from the very beginning, and I too have noticed a shift in the atmosphere. Just look at the resistance to a simple call for people to be welcoming toward newcomers. It’s telling, isn’t it?

@Rikudou_Sennin Those were the days  I’m planning to resurrect that project sooner or later, I miss those times. It is sad to hear you’re feeling disheartened, this community needs more of the OGs around like you.

I was thinking of resurrecting it as well! Especially with the incoming influx of new users, having a way to change the visuals beyond just the ambience would be awesome.

It isnt up to us to decide who will join, but people will be mean on the internet, that is how it has allways been. You dont have to take everything personally, just ask what question you have to ask, but If people find it dumb that you are asking before checking, they have the same right to tell you that. Just grow some thicker skin, its not about you personally, and you shouldn’t take it as such.

As they say, “great minds think alike!” In all seriousness, that is great news. You’ll definitely do a better job than I ever could, I’m really not that great at it.

I’ve been stuck trying to figure out whether Sailfish OS supports FreeDesktop specifications or not. I’d like the support to be more robust now, but I’m currently at a dead end. Jolla did have an icon package for the Turing Phone, so there must be at least a partial implementation, but I’m still trying to get it to work.

I’d love to hear more about your plans, though, so maybe we can talk about it somewhere else (because I risk going completely OT here!)

We probably agree on the general picture here. The forum has room for improvement. I think oldtimers have a responsibility to influence the forum for the better, on the other hand I also clearly understand what rubs them the wrong way (including Gen AI CEOs, the recurring questions and rants masquerading as questions). And I see some newcomers being met with an undeservedly rough attitude.

After all, this is a support forum, specifically a mutual support forum. We need to build a culture with that in mind. Accepting that more Sailfish users means more new users and that new users weren’t born with any knowledge of the OS is part of that.

The solution seems to be simple: provide helpful and cozy reply before the ‘toxic-5-or-so’ have a chance to reply and ruin it for everybody, tone and language policing have great history of working great, but the problem really is completely different from my pov, 15 years ago everyone on tjc and everyone that went for jolla were maemo/meego expatriates, pretty much 100% linux enthusiasts, currently the new bunch are just a random bunch who: want EUphone (ideally it will be exactly like android or iphone, minor problems like qrcode scanning in android app doesn’t work, throw it in the trash (funnily enough that was a veteran of sfos kek)), care about privacy so Finland better than US, heard from an influencer that this will free them from google (will then complain googlepay etc doesn’t work)(and some of them I’m sure are decent people). The community went from specialist linux bunch to a random assortment of societal woes and sure we can all agree it’s what’s needed for jolla to survive, but the community is just different, there’s no denying that fact. Maybe splitting the forum into devs/oldtimers and friendly/cozy forum is the way to go? This way you can have a friendly, endlessly supportive (until ppl there get tired too and become oldtimers) forum for newfriends and the old guard can be cranky and call dumb ppl like linus used to in peace
Edit: the only problem I see with this is @fravaccaro and @Rikudou_Sennin can complain all they want about unfriendliness, if they become the only emotional support ppl on this new support forum they will quit soon enough and all the platitudes how old community was so great will go into gutters (muh oldtimer jokes and flashing these oldtimer badges is not gonna work when you have to reply 50th time about a thing in readme, but good luck oldtimers), the old community was cool because everyone was a linux enthusiast, can’t revive this, current jolla first-timers are completely different bunch
Edit2: we literally went from enthusiastic ppl: we’re taking on two huge battleships on our little gnu/dinghy to having heart attacks because of an email
Edit3: one could also look at it as failure of the community, 15 years ago linux on phones was ‘the worst it ever will be’ to copy AI hypers, how wrong have we been kek

btw oh old and sage frevaccaro, if a newbie is acting like this, should we just take it for sake of jolla?

can’t wait for your reply, in order to reply to a newbie post 9959, the backlog is now only xyz

Seriously, if you complain about community response, start responding yourself and show us the way (muh “I’m afraid to post nowadays” is not gonna cut it if you’re gonna tone police nowadays, deal with this yourself and show us the way), muh ‘we were so joyful in 2012’, yeah, we didn’t have to deal with this sh*t in 2012

You’re asking like I just came out from a bush. I’ve been moderating (and co-founded) the Italian community for literally 13 years + I’m a moderator in the telegram group too. You’re using a straw man argument, not every newbie is rude, and every community needs to deal with rudeness, tjc had to deal with disruptive behavior in 2012.

And please keep the “old and sage” sarcasm to yourself, I’ve been employing manners and respect and I expect the same from whoever wants to interact with me. If you’re annoyed by my comment, it’s not mandatory for you to reply, feel free to ignore it.

Nah, but your comments reeek of ‘muh old age’, while offering nothing in return, you guise should just behave better, yeah good luck when you post here once in a blue moon, step up and be the change you want to see and don’t hide in the italian community, then we can talk

You’re free to read whatever you want in my comment, clearly other people read something different, so it’s not really about me. I don’t hide. I moderate there because I’m dedicated to providing a safe space for Italian-speakers to get informed and discuss Jolla, just like others did with other language-specific communities. It’s not up to you to hush me or tell me where to moderate or be active. Again, I’m asking you to show some manners.

No, you waltz in here and complain how community was so much more fun and joyful in 2012 and now it’s such a shitty place to be, yet you’ve been gone here and are one of the reasons we’re overrun with people who barely know anything about linux, maemo, meego etc etc It has to be nice to complain from the sideways how everyone is doing everything wrong, noone’s handing out cards to people to make it better, just step in and be the change you want to see. Oh wait, you can’t keep answering the same questions 24/7/365??? Who would’ve thought (passive aggressive questions with f-words and b-words, you guys just suck at being friendly)

You don’t have to answer the same question? Or are you obliged to do so? You don’t have to answer if you think I’m not bringing anything new to the table.

And again, I’m a moderator myself, I know what you’re talking about, I have my fair share of questions, don’t you worry about that.

And thank you for proving my point; I expressed an opinion, and you felt compelled to attack me. I’m not interested in continuing this conversation. Have a good evening.
