Firefox Focus Browser

Because the native browser in SFOS 4.6 has all sorts of issue with its inability to render some sites either properly or at all, its constant and possibly OOM related crashes, and its general sluggishness on my Xperia 10 iii, I’ve been experimenting with other browsers.

These have necessarily been Android browsers because there are really no viable native alternatives imo, so a paid subscription to get AppSupport is therefore a must (I tried the native Angelfish for a while, but that kept crashing as well).

The one I’ve been most impressed with is Firefox Focus. This is small, compact, with minimal features and is privacy focused (hence the name). I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now on my Xperia 10 iii - it renders very fast - in fact much faster than the native browser, is right up to date (last update just a few months ago) so renders websites the native browser can’t cope with, and hasn’t crashed once or caused other native apps to close due to OOM issues.

Its a stripped down version of Firefox, so doesn’t have lots of functions like the full-fat Firefox (it does multiple browser windows, bookmarks and other basics) - but for what I need from a browser its ideal.

I don’t know what the SFOS 5.0 ESR91 browser will be like in terms of solving some of the existing native browser issues, but for now Firefox Focus is a good alternative for me, and may be so for others.

What I usually use is Fennec, you can find it in F-Droid. It’s also based on but slimmer than the Firefox itsself. The best you can install uBlock Origin on it and it works like Firefox on Desktop. I wish it would be native as sometimes Android can be slower in response than native apps.

I would also recommend Fennec.

Here you can also configure DNS over HTTP (DoH) or DNS over TLS (DoT) with you trusted provider via about:config (-> search for TRR). As far as I know this interface is not available in the Firefox Android browsers from Mozilla.

I would recommend Vivaldi: Vivaldi Browser on Android | Fast Android browser with Ad blocker

I have used DuckDuckGo and I am quite happy for that. Normally I try native browser first though. My phone is Xperia 10 II, so the problems might be different.

I have that installed as well as Mull which is based on Fennec, but with Mozilla’s telemetry removed.

The creator replies to the question ‘What is the difference between Fennec, Iceraven and Mull?’ here: https://www.reddit.com/r/degoogle/comments/ztdkgc/what_exactly_is_the_difference_between_fennec/?rdt=47453

Mull is available on F-Droid

DDG has pretty bad tracking protection. I would suggest Mull + add-ons like uBlock origin, Privacy Badger, Local CDN and of course Cookie AutoDelete.

AdNauseam and TrackMeNot add-on are also to be concerned.
