Today I received my new Jolla phone, I am novice to sailfish. The fingerprint scanner needs to scan twice every single time, with every finger I use. But when I double tap to wake the screen, it unlocks with one scan. How to fix this?

This is by design, first wakes up , second is scan.
Doubletap, , press power , to wake and then read, -->one read. 
Well, the first attempt asks for the security code.
Yes it does, fingerprint is good for security. Maybe there should be text correction, give code/ scan finger.
I meant, when I press the fingerprint reader, it asks for a security code, then I press again and then it unlocks using the fingerprint reader. How is that by design?
There are two things as @silakka already wrote:
- first is a screen wakeup, so power event,
- second is unlocking, a security event.
Itâs confusing and I also hope that they will join them.

It has been like this since the first SFOS phone with a fingerprint reader, 10 years ago (Xperia X). Something in the software design apparently needed it. I too hope it can be reworked - but i also have been fine with it for 10 years.

It must be possible (at least on the new phone), because even for the first tap, the sensor only reacts to known fingerprints, which means it has access to the fingerprint database. I seem to remember that the original problem was that the first tap was necessary to âactivateâ the sensor, which couldnât access the database when the screen was turned off, so any fingerprint could activate it, and the second tap was needed to actually check the fingerprint database.

I am pretty sure I know what causes this, probably the LUKS keyring, or some other encryption thing, anywhay, by design is extremely annoying. As I am figuring sailfish out, itâs UI is annoying, the âopen appsâ on the mainscreen makes no sence, this is where you close them, on the main screen? These tiles actually show my rolling authentication codes from my totp application, these tiles, some of them are black, why? Why canât I just pin the most used apps to the screen it always starts with, I think I am going to bin this phone. By design streaming media issues, black screens, not supported messages etc.. I havenât even tried using it as a phone, does that even work? Nice try Jolla, itâs a fail, by design.
What dos this have to do with LUKS?
It is not like the disk stops being decrypted when the screen locks. Also this has been around since way before we had encryption.

A bug. Should be fixed on in one of the next versions.
Thereâs a request for that, and I agree itâs sorely needed. On most Sailfish devices until now, there was not that much RAM and so most things youâd pin would be quickly killed by the OOM (out-of-memory) process, but on the new phone thereâs more than enough RAM for such a function to exist. And it shouldnât be difficult to implement because everything is already there: you can already change the order of the covers, so making some covers âpinnedâ, âstickyâ, or whatever, shouldnât be much extra work.

It seems that you need to test more or inform yourself a bit better.
There are more then three ways to close the app.
Black tiles are black only if app is not native and some other conditions âŚ
It doesnât make sense to try a new OS and NOT being open for differences and some learning.

This problem was discussed before, and we actually came up with some really good ideas for possible solutions. I think our friend Keto was one of the people in charge, and I remember him saying that he would look into this issue as well.
By binning you hopefully mean selling it on, otherwise that would be not only a waste of quite a bit of money but also a very avoidable creation of e-waste. Not that I am expecting an answer. Whatâs the point of staying on the forum if deciding that the system isnât it satisfying the own preferences/requirements?

Iâm not sure if I would like instant unlock to be honest.
Yes most phones from big manufacturers work as intended with a touch on the sensor, but my HMD skyline either registers wrong fingerprint or unlocks by itself with normal daily usage. I mean not even trying to unlock the phone, just grabbing it.
I canât stress enough how badly it works and how it literally renders the phone unusable without a case.
I have faith in Jolla, but if anything changes on that front, please make it an option.

You should know that touching the power switch and pushing it to bottom are two different things. Try to push it (quickly) to bottom and it will open lock screen and then scanning fingerprint opens app drawer. So, no need to scan/read fingerprint twice.

Is the J2âs fingerprint reader also part of the power button, like with Xperia 10 II/III?
I have the latter and I can* touch (not depress!) the button once to wake the phone up and another time to unlock.
And it vibrates both times.
A short vibration seems to indicate a fingerprint read because it does not vibrate when I depress the button.
This would never manage to annoy me enough to âbinâ it.
Anyhow, how is this on the J2?
* Yes, I can also depress it the first time, then just touch it.
