I just wanted to direct your attention towards this. Those of you who already have an account, you might want to take part in the discussions, mostly on !linuxphones@lemmy.ca i.e. the c/linuxphones community. (Also !linuxphones@lemmy.ml)
Others might even get inspired to join the fediverse; it’s easy!
People are willing to consider it as a real and working alternative, no doubt inspired by recent policy changes in the Googleverse.
Amazing thing to see There has historically been quite a lot misconceptions and wrong information about SailfishOS so important to participate to the conversation!
Most people still think FOSS is the most important aspect, which (in their minds) disqualifies SFOS both for being Freemium and having closed source parts.
I truly hope SFOS (the company and the devs) are serious about open-sourcing, hopefully all of it; not so much for myself (I decided long ago to trust them) as for getting more users & devs on board, possibly getting more cross-pollination too.
Asked about usable daily driver Linux phones, people are super opinionated, but do not have anything to show for it. AFAICS SFOS is still the only real choice.
Maybe Ubuntu Touch, too? No clear statements on that either.
PostmarketOS looks pretty interesting though, with mainlining and lots of community maintained devices that are “almost there”.
Yes we need SFOS on cheap main stream phones available in mobile phone shop on the next corner, not exotic Sony phones we have to buy as a long time investment.
Maybe Ubuntu Touch, too? No clear statements on that either.
Ubuntu Touch definitely seems usable from what I’ve seen; a friend of mine has been happily using it exclusively for a few years now. he doesn’t use Waydroid, so no clue as to how well that works, but all the native apps work well.
…or, well - well enough to have convinced me to try daily driving sailfish, anyway.
it’s definitely my platform of choice if sailfish stops open sourcing.
they have some ideas sailfish could use to steal, as well – I can’t help but be envious of their first-class support for webapps. :^)
sailfish’s UI is still miles ahead, though.
A window of opportunity for SFOS might be opening, this was posted in Lobsters about Jolla. I agreed with the part that states:
With Google now planning to block sideloading of unverified Android apps, the walls are closing in on openness […] This creates exactly the kind of disruption that opens a window for something truly alternative, like a Linux mobile OS, to step in and compete.
I also see a spike of SFOS-related comments in major sites like HN or Reddit, which is a pleasant surprise.
I think there are parts in Europe (South West) where it is more difficult to get Xperias, and they are not present in the standard electronic stores outlets…
The lemmy.ml is highly problematic, many people (including me) simply ignore that instance because it’s notoriously pushing far left propaganda and banning everyone who even implies Stalin was anything else but a saint.
That’s a problem with pretty much all these twitter-alternatives, people jumped ship as soon as their mr real life tony stark who was just saving the planet with electric cars turned out to have different political opinions and the echo chambers are dying out fast, as none of them gained any traction and infighting happens (the dozen clicks on that lemmy instance link is probably more visitors than it naturally had since last submission 8 months ago), all the virtue signalling leftists that led this exodus are back on twitter as neither mastodon nor bluesky provide enough attention for these ppl. Shame Jolla abandoned their twitter as they should not be promoting sfos to a single side (and you can easily see the results, 1.5k followers on techhub vs 35k on twitter, getting double digit ‘likes’ on average post vs easily 200+ on twitter, but I guess preaching to the ‘right’ side is more important and abandoning twitter is needed to not have a backlash from the easily offended crowd, bigger reach be damned, we’ll see how that plays out in the long term, edit: especially now that a certain number or preorders is needed for next gen JP to happen, cutting out half of your audience might be just the wrong choice to make, but hey, at least we didn’t help elron the muskovite or whatever the latest name mr iron man has in the unhinged parts)
Who cares about wrong, if you’re not gonna sell enough phones there will be no next gen phone, then you can cheer ‘We did it lemmy/leddit!!! we beat the nazis by killing jolla’, enjoy your identity politics
I did not realize before you were trying to beat nazis. Well, if I can help with that, let me know. It seems we both stand aside against right wing scum.
