[Feature Request] System-wide Picture-in-Picture (PiP) / Floating Video Window for Sailfish OS

Hi All!

I would like to propose a discussion about bringing a system-wide Picture-in-Picture (PiP) / floating video window feature natively to Sailfish OS.

As a mobile operating system, having the ability to keep watching a video (from YouTube, local media players, browser, etc.) in a small, movable overlay window while multitasking is becoming an essential standard feature.

:light_bulb: Current Progress & Proof of Concept (Demo)

To test the feasibility of this concept on Sailfish OS, I have created a working demo based on RooTheater-SailfishOS (version v0.7.0-pip-overlay), RooTheater-SailfishOS v0.7.0-pip-overlay

This demo proves that overlaying and dragging a video window smoothly is entirely possible within the Sailfish UI framework. However, doing this purely at the individual app level has its limitations—it really shines when it’s a system-level capability that any video-playing app can leverage.

This is a really nice feature. Could I ask something? When entering Android apps, does it stay the same way, or does it disappear?

It’s based on CODeRUS’s screentapshot-lipstick.
