did anyone manage to install gcc on a sailfish phone to compile natively on SailfishOS?
It’s present in default repos. I once compiled Python 2.2 when I needed it, directly on Sailfish OS

Sounds good. I have tried to install gcc on the phone via pkcon install gcc on the command line. Unfortunately there was no package ‘gcc’.
Can you help me with the package name?
Maybe you are just missing a pkcon refresh?
But in general: pkcon search and you shall find.

For me both pkcon & zypper show gcc package, matter of running refresh as suggested above I guess
