Hi everyone,
I would like to share a small project I developed with Claude (Anthropic’s AI), for my own use. It complements Garmin Connect running in Android AppSupport, until a native solution is fully operational. On that front, I have high hopes for the ongoing Vapaamin project, which talks to the watch directly.
The problem
Garmin Connect works well in AppSupport, but it only sees Android notifications. Calls and SMS are handled by the native Sailfish apps, so they never reached my watch.
What Callbridge does
It forwards native Sailfish events to Garmin Connect as Android notifications:
- incoming calls, while the phone rings, with the caller’s name when the number is in your contacts;
- missed calls;
- SMS, with the sender and the text.
Please note that it only brings notifications to the watch: you cannot answer or decline a call, nor reply to a message, from your wrist.
How it works
A small Sailfish service listens to D-Bus (SMS and missed-call notifications, incoming calls from oFono) and drops each event into a folder shared with AppSupport. A tiny Android app picks it up and re-posts it as an Android notification, which Garmin Connect forwards as usual. Your watch pairing is left untouched, and no root access is needed. A native settings app lets you switch the service on and off, install the Android part, hide its icon and send a test notification.
Nothing in it is specific to Garmin: any companion app that forwards Android notifications should work, but I could only test with Garmin Connect.
Installation
Download the RPM from the latest release, then:
devel-su pkcon install-local callbridge-1.6.0-1.noarch.rpm
Open the Callbridge app, tap “Install Android app”, and follow the README. The most important step is to allow notifications for the Callbridge Android app, then to allow Callbridge in Garmin Connect.
Caveats
The code was “vibe-coded” with Claude Opus 5.5: I defined the needs and tested every version, but the code has not been reviewed line by line. It has only been tested on a Jolla phone with Sailfish OS 5, an Android 15 container and a Garmin watch. It comes with no warranty.
Feedback, bug reports and fixes are very welcome, here or on GitHub. It would be especially helpful to hear from people on other devices, Sailfish versions or watch brands.
