I took my new C2 out for the first time last night and tried some public Wireless Internet.
Some of it worked, but there were problems which persist now.
I was able to view timetables at bustimes.org, but choosing the tracking map just opens a white screen with no window or border, only a small box (button?) saying “close map”
I now find that the browser home page, Jolla.com, whilst appearing to “load” in the bottom panel animation, only displays a white page with a circular timer animation in the centre and remains stuck like that.
I though that perhaps the Jolla server was down, but it works fine from my PC.
It looks like some browser setting has changed, but I don’t remember changing anything. I’ve looked in Browser\Settings, but can’t find anything that fixes this.
I’ve discovered the cause of the problem loading Jolla.com.
I now remember that I turned JavaScript off in the Browser\Settings. This was the only way I could get rid of annoying pop up adverts whilst trying to access bus times!
I have pop-ups blocked in Browser\Settings\Permissions, so I’m puzzled why pop-up ads (from Yahoo) appear?
Now, when I try to see the bus tracking map, I still get a blank page, but with the bus number below the “close map” button, a “stack-of papers” icon, +/- buttons and the two annoying pop-ups from the timetable page. Still no map!
Are there special settings I need to view graphical pages like maps?
Is there an ad-block plug-in I need to install?
Also when viewing a “normal” web page, there is a “stack-of papers” icon in the right corner of the bottom panel. If I tap this it turns blue, but nothing else happens. Any ideas what this is?
Similarly, the boxed number in the left corner of the bottom panel turns blue when tapped - and just sits there. Poking this violently / repeatedly eventually opens a tabs window..
Xperia 10 III with SFOS 5.0.0.76 here. The Jolla homepage loads fine, also the desktop version. With the bus tracking map it’s the same: instead of the map just a plain white screen.
It’s because of the outdated browser engine.
I understand that one of the goals with owning a Jolla phone would be to rid yourself of Android applications all together, but the Jolla browser sucks!
I tried for a long time to make it work, but found it increasingly frustrating, especially if you’re using your phone as a daily driver.
It has to be a huge undertaking to support a bespoke browser, along with their bespoke OS, so I commend Jolla for the effort.
Ultimately, I chose the DuckDuckGo browser; It’s privacy focused (so they say), straightforward in its approach and not a huge resource hog (depending on the website).
I hope in the future Jolla can contribute more resources to their browser effort as it would make this great OS even greater!
It is unbearable to me as well, but with devices like C2 it’s very hard to use Android browsers because they lag terribly.
We really need a proper native browser, and I don’t mean just a newer esr version.
I didn’t realise the state of Android browsers on the C2, that is unfortunate. Doesn’t help that every website has devolved into an app accessed through the browser. I hate the complexity of the internet, things were so much better in the dial-up modem era
Thanks for this insight, I will give it a try. Doesn’t look to be in Chum, Storeman or the Jolla store. I found the following instructions to install and will give it a try, unless these are outdated and you have another suggestion?
