Bluetooth Car connection does not take over contacts or "recently called"

DESCRIPTION:

when connecting to my car the contacts or recent calls are not available

PRECONDITIONS:

A car with bluetooth connection for mobile phones :wink:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Connect with the car, switch to mobile phone there in the car computer.

EXPECTED RESULT:

contacts and recent calls are shown

ACTUAL RESULT:

plain empty

MODIFICATIONS:

none, out of the box

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

With my Xperia V the contact list did work but recent calls were only listed up until the phone was reconnected to the car, but not updated while using in the car - still, was better than nothing…

Oh man, I really used C2, did I…sorry my fault, I am on the new 2026 phone with that issue, yikes, seems I was a little to much distracted yesterday.

On the Sony 10 III, I see issues with the OBEX service all the time. Even after I restart it, it crashes again after a while.

For the past few days, I’ve been using JP 2026, and I’ve also seen the same behaviour from time to time.

For the RPG, I also suggest checking the status and then restarting the OBEX service:

systemctl --user status obex.service
systemctl --user restart obex.service
systemctl --user status obex.service

Yes, it is exactly the same for me. I just received my Jolla Phone a few days ago, and tried to pair it with my carr. First, phone was paired successfully, but when I checked the profiles listed within the bluetooth connection, there was no PBAP profile listed. As a result, car infotainment indicated it was trying to sync the contacts forever. But whole situation rang a bell, it was the same issue as I hit on Xperia 10 III with SFOS 5.1 (before it worked fine), and same procedure I used before to make it work worked again :wink:

Thank you for this! You are my hero. Restarting obex was the missing key to get the contacts transferred from Jolla 2 to Octavia III. There was an additional thing I noticed before doing this. When initiating the connection from the car, I got a choice of handsfree and audio profiles on the infotainment system. With the choice of handsfree profile only hfp was listed on the phone side under the connection info. On the other hand, if the connection was initiated from the phone side there was no choice of profile and the connection was automatically established with a long list of profiles under the connection info on the phone. However, crucially PBAP was missing from the list.

You’re welcome :slight_smile: Well, clues regarding obex and its restart were already shared by others elsewhere in this forum, but the part with missing PBAP profile, that was something which took me a while before I realized the importance :smiley:

Same here with Ford EV car (not Wolkswagen MEP platform car). Sometimes recent calls appear, mostly not. Interesting thing is, that when recent calls are showed, timestamp is 31.12.1899 for all recent calls :smile:

Hi all. Restarting obex.service was a good way to add contacts, thanks! I have another issue, using dual sim it works only with one but not with both. Anyone is dealing with this? I need to find the time and reports the bug but i want to ask before

What does not work for with Dual SIM regarding this topic? As this is not possible.

However, after some time it stops working and needs to be restarted again. I couldn’t notice any pattern so far why and when it stops working, but it usually works for some hours so it doesn’t cause any trouble while driving.

You could probably set up a disconnection rule in either Situations or Automagic (or even with udev maybe?) so that when the device disconnects from the Car bluetooth it runs the script.

Hopefully Jolla are aware of the issue and a fix is coming

good idea indeed.
I assumed these topics to be watched by Jolla, but yes, since this problem seems to be across several generations SF and various phones I have indeed my doubts. But isn’t this the official place to put bugs for the 2026? If not, where else? Guess could open a ticket though…

Just to add some observations I made meanwhile.

  • Recent Calls does not work reliably, indeed it sometimes doesn’t work at all, despite restarting oobex shortly before.
  • New contacts which have been added won’t directly synchronize either while I have no idea yet what makes it trigger to do that.

I created a hack/workaround for this: SailfishOS-Tuning/BtObexRestartHack at main · wapsi/SailfishOS-Tuning · GitHub

Basically it’s a Python service that listens for incoming BT connections for certain MAC address, and triggers immediate restart of Obex and then it tries to connect the device many times. I know it’s ugly and the root cause should fixed instead by Jolla dev team, but so far I’ve been happy with this: No more random situation where my car is unable to connect my phone and/or contacts/call history sync failure dialogs on my car’s display.
