They had to work with exciting PCBs and parts as far as i understand which dictated the dimensions pretty much.
As fot the visual aspects/styling of the phone (the HW) i was not a huge fan of the original jolla phone design but i get that is subjective.
Given that things have taken their course (HW wise) they now have the time to design something better and IMO more fitting to the software. What they will do for the next phone (j3) up to them. But i maintain my views on how things should be.
That poll was for max size and we are above the 6’’ mark with the J2. So clearly the community wanted smaller, and Jolla apologized for the fact they could not find a smaller screen.
I’ve been wondering if we could not mod the phone to accept a smaller screen on the same base. Maybe put a 4’’ screen at the bottom left leaving the rest of the mainbord empty? That would be radical design.

Yet I still don’t understand how hard it is to use sfos with one hand. Swipe from any side, bottom, middle of the screen, pulleys, what else is needed?

People will have interpreted it differently in at least these ways:
Most things in Sailfish that aren’t pulley menus are top-aligned (lists, active covers, launcher icons, etc), and you can’t select the first item in a list through swipes. A single switch at the top of the page could probably just move to somewhere in the middle, but I don’t think there’s a way around lists.
And have a certain size vertically as well as some dead space above (app page titles).
Apart from closing apps there is no need to reach the exact top of the screen.
Sure, but my thumb would still need to be about 5 cm longer to reach the top item in the list when holding the phone with the bottom corner resting securely on my palm. On the original phone, holding it the same way, I could reach the top item. I had to stretch my hand to swipe from the top, but I could actually still do it with a secure grip on the phone, without too much of an active effort to wiggle it around.
I was thinking of a physical mod, with a smaller display.
It’s not hard to use a giant phone with one hand; however, it requires a lot of gymnastics. I have large hands, by the way. But even with 2 more cm added to my fingers, I would still find it uncomfortable to slide the phone up and down with one hand just to press buttons at the top and bottom of the screen.
The same goes for the general size of the phone. Is it hard to find a coat pocket or a bag to fit the phone in? No, but many people would find it more convenient to be able to keep it in any pocket.

Well, then please provide a source, supporting your claim. It is entirely new to me that the voted screen size was the “max” screen size rather than the “prefered” screen size.
