Add a Search field to the Top Menu

What about add a search field to the Top Menu?
Now when you open the top menu, the shortcut for Ambience appears. Then we could display a search field instead.

To activate it, you would have to wait 2 seconds and a cursor would appear. If you release the pressure, then the keyboard appear and you can perform a search.
If you continue the gesture downwards, then the Top Menu appears.

Would it be like for searching settings or like general search which includes your apps etc?

Mmh, good question. In my opinion for general search and in the long-term, you should be able to exclude some directories, apps, etc.

There’s already QuickLaunch in Chum, just creating the top menu shortcut should be simple enough.

While I think I’d prefer dedicated apps, iff there were something like a global search field, something like KDE’s krunner would be nice:

Various plugins provide anything from simple algebra to full-text document search.

A proper plugin system could also allow this search to grow functionality over time.
Especially if apps could opt in to provide such a plugin -maybe in a similar way Sharing works today.

I’d love having a search (or rather filter) field in the app grid. At the top is quite annoying with device sizes these days. But at the bottom does not feel right (functionally).

That al sounds great for a real keyboard… but for a phone?

I’d like an option in the app grid to add a search (for apps) and in the settings to search for some setting. (of cause please make it configurable to be there or not)

In the top/action menu I think I would find it annoying… i use the top menu way to often for toggeling off and on Wifi, Bluetooth, etc. and there is not a real benefit for me there with a search. It just takes away screen space in many situations where at least I would not need it.

I’d say a global search is more like something and app should do.

Agree, very good idea! But a second swipe should not be necessary to reach the top menu.

I never mentioned 2 swipes. You need to release your finger to display the search field. Best would be if I take the time to create a small video explaining my idea.

Thanks for the tip! It’s “Quick Launch” btw, Chum’s search function doesn’t find it otherwise.

Very interesting idea! This sounds like patch, and I’m very curious.

Why not just adding the search field directly under the ambience, and the keyboard appears if I tap the search field?

And why should we wait for an activation?

I also font untersrand the ladt sentence. If I swipe gown I already get the full top menu. Or for you want to split that so that with a first swipe down we would only see ambience and search field and only after an additional swipe the top menu appears?

To my mind only adding the search field would be enough, so swipe down, getting full top menu with just a search field added after ambience and done. The results of the search should open in another view then, with the standard backwards gesture in the left top corner (only question would be if that back gestures should lead back to top menu view or to the view I had before opening the top menu… I’d say the latter).

Me too, so I use this very underrated app called SearchNemo. Still working perfect, after the author of QuickLaunch fixed it. I have it on my lock screen menu and app drawer.

I don’t want to hijack this topic here, but as it’s related:

For anyone interested in an Full-Text search (alternative or addition to the Tracker/Documents search), I have toyed with the Xapian/Recoll tools and have a very prototype app here:

I find little time to hack on things (or rather: I get distracted and move on to the next thing hehe), so contributions very much welcome!

Note that this is a document index/search, not something like QuickLaunch. And getting the initial indexing to work right can need a bit of tinkering with the config, as it is it’s not streamlined for ease of use at all.

To avoid various manipulations and don’t have to click on the top of your phone. It’s ok on a Jolla Phone 1, but annoying on a X10-II.

That would be good. Up to now I don’t understand where the problem may be that you mentioned on your message directly above.

Edit: I think I understand now. Wasn’t aware the top menu can be opened on the homescreen with sliding down from the middle - I always do this sliding down from the top edge like you need to do when your not on homescreen.

The question is now: which workflow should be find to display a search field if you open the Top Menu from the top of the screen (like if have an opened app).

EDIT: Perhaps:

  • Put finger on top of your screen
  • Pull down
    • Search field appears
  • Wait a bit, a vibration appear
  • Release your finger
  • Focus is now on the search field and keyboard is now displayed

And if you want to display the normal Top Menu:

  • Put finger on top of your screen
  • Pull down
    • Search field appears
  • Don’t release the pressure on the screen et continue to the bottom
  • Search field disappears
  • Top Menu appears
