3rd party back covers and accessories and commercial use?

Hi, I am posting to ask for some clarification.

Are 3rd parties allowed to create TOH implementations to offer to sell to the community, or does this require specific licensing from Jolla/percentage of proceeds.

TOH released schematics look to be for non-commercial use which I would assume makes it difficult for someone to make special colors to sell on Etsy etc, although I assume one could create their own 3D model of TOH that clips to the back not based on that. However I question if it is possible to create something like that and include something like LED or E-INK etc to the back which directly interfaces with the pin and is able to sell that.

I mostly ask for myself as I have a notebook of ideas on what would be cool, but I wanted to inquire the community on if it is even worth trying this with my resources.

Looks like at least the github shiws BSD-3 clause, so maybe I was mistaken and it can be used?

From my knowledge they said on the Day1 event that its free for the community to make and sell their own TOHs (in topic about a theoretical 3.5mm audio TOH)

I would imagine that Jolla wants to have 3rd party TOHs. But to be completely sure you can raise the question in this week community meeting, which I highly encourage!

At no point have I ever heard them say that it’s for non-commercial use only.

The only restriction I could find is that you can’t use their brand name to imply that your product is somehow endorsed by them.

I don’t see why it shouldn’t be possible. You have all the power and data lines you need for that. They even provided the Inari Blue TOH as a convenient example of how to do it.

As far as I have understood, you are free to do commercial 3rd party stuff, but if you want to add some functionality that requires the use of the presence detector with separate software, you would have to request vendor id from Jolla. For dummy devices and testing phase, you can use the development id.

Edit: There is no mention about any fees when requesting the vendor id, just do a PR and the id is reserved for you after the PR is merged:

Thank you for clarification everyone, maybe I will make my GBC colors possible, Aromic purple TOH would be nice

What I would like to see (and would instantly buy several of) is a TOH with the pins and EEPROM already in place and enough space for a custom PCB, so likely a TOH that sits flush with the cameras. This would eliminate the wobble when putting the phone on a flat surface, plus it would provide makers with a convenient way of building their own cool TOHs.

I would gladly pay for a “Maker TOH” that I can then customise, rather than having to design and 3D-print one myself.

Yeah, that sounds sweet.

Maybe even half a mm thicker so that the camera lens glass doesnt touch the table. This would prevent scratches.

Well, Jolla just needs to add proper soldering points and maybe some additional protection circuitry to the PCBs they already use for their standard back covers. Just add your own PCB and connect it by soldering a few short wires.

Me too!

The back cover has to be different, though, to make room for a PCB and the components. (Probably doesn’t work using the injection molds Jollla already have.)

It would already be a great help, if Jolla sold just the base PCB which I mentioned in my previous post to us.
