Currently I am using Whisperfish and Fernschreiber. Both have to be “in foreground”. Coming from Android I thought that this is a missing feature. But now I am quite happy with it. Sometimes it is good to be out of the comfort zone. 
It does not drain battery, and it is like a “widget” in the Android world. Hence, I don’t miss the daemon feature. There are many other features that are more important.
