What device would you get?

Although I’ve recommended it, there is one issue that’s irritating. Just today I tested the VollaOS install and all systems go. Then I tested Ubuntu Touch, same. SFOS something is wrong with the video recording (camera otherwise makes nice photos). And the networking is a bit odd. Some, @Fellfrosch , can’t get stable hotspot working altough that works for me. So, there are some odd bits.

The Gigaset GS5 with 2GB less RAM does not have the video recording issue.

Mmm a fairphone 5 with OLED
L.E: hope it has double tap to wake /ducks

The image for GS5/rephone/Volla2 is here. run-build-testing (#3279514586) · Jobs · sailfishos-porters-ci / Halium Mimameid Ci · GitLab

I usually first install VollaOS with the Ubports installer and then SFOS … working on finding the fix for Video recording.

Reminds me of the good ol N9 days

And Jerrys video hurt.

And the rephone also doesn’t have an issue if you set the resolution to FHD: The Volla 22 (Gigaset GS5) Thread - #512 by poetaster

I had forgotten that it could be an issue. So the rephone video is fine.

So… Is there any reason to choose the rephone rather than a GS5?
The RAM probably, but anything else?

The RAM is the only real reason. I’ve noticed it doesn’t make that much difference, but it depends on your habits. Some advertising has the rephone with a higher resolution camera, but I think that’s bull (it’s the same camera as the GS5 in the same package from mediatek). . I was recommending the rephone because nearly new phones were going for around 150 euro on ebay (in Germany).

Thanks.

Waydroid would be a use case (only because Tidal doesn’t work in the stock browser nor in Angelfish…). That might be an argument pro Rephone, I guess. I have found a nearly new GS5 for <150€ (but I can’t make waydroid work until now  ) But as I could return it, I could also get a rephone for the same price…

What is Tidal? Might actually be RAM bound, but I’ve noticed the browser is still really flaky on the volla-likes, lthough, I haven’t tested much on the experia’s (10iii).

Tidal is a music streaming provider and they only have a web player or an Android App. (And before discussions start in this thread: yes, streaming is stupid, the artists earn too little, music has to be touchable, why do you take SFOS if you sell your soul anyway, …: 1. Tidal is after all the best service among the bad ones, because they are firstly artist-owned and secondly pay more than Spotify or similar, 2. I would not know many artists without this service and they would earn even less, namely nothing, from me and 3.: if I had to buy the music instead of streaming it, I could never acquire everything I like)

(But I am convinced that in your App portfolio a Tidal app would look very good )

At least there several reverse engineered tidal apis to be found on github.

Sounds like my first SFOSproject (and first project after “Hello world” on my Schneider CPC464 at all) ?

It’s becoming OT: but I would love having a native SFOS Tidal app! (Android Tidal is running fine with App Support though)

No, there is also this SIM issue.
Or? Dont’ tell me I am really the only one and alone wirh this double SIM having to reboot [random number in a range of 2 to 6] times to have both working :smiling_face_with_tear: :yum:

Waydroid works on the GS5, normally.
Needs some attemps to start sometimes though.

I was some years ago experimenting with a tidal app for sailfish:

However, I had/have too much more relevant stuff to do and I was not really interested in following this project for me alone.

But maybe, this project can be brought back to live in some way. I would be happy to see tidal support on sailfish

Well, with one SIM (the diff, I think), I just remember to toggle PIN on/off and shut settings before reboot or shutdown. Just comes up. It’s strange, but it works, at least with one SIM on GS5 and rephone.

Interesting. Will have a look.

I have to admit I’ve been more keen about a bandcamp app (have a rough mock up) since I listen to a lot of indie stuff on bandcamp, but I’ll have a look!

For those who don’t know it, have a look @cypherpunks media explorer on open repos or chum.

Did you reverse the api or find documentation. on the website I found no developer facing docs?

I am using GitHub - tamland/python-tidal: Python API for TIDAL music streaming service - the api itself works nicely (or worked, I am not up-to-date …)

With some updated login procedure, I was unable to follow the C++ way, at least thought. And on the other side, I am not good in writing python code, although now I am more experienced than back then. So, I could get back into it … some day.
