A dissident anywhere on this world should not use a phone (be it “smart” or not) at all for these activities; actually any mobile phone shall be switched off or at home then.
Only a fully open source stack compiled in a reproducible manner (e.g. most Linux-, FreeBSD-, OpenBSD- and NetBSD-distributions) provides at least significant danger of becoming detected for a dissident’s adversaries (see e.g. the story of “Jia Tang”'s XZ utils backdoor). Hence using anything else for dissident’s activities is outright stupid.
In the russian forums are plenty of dumps of any versions. So installing the Aurora its not a problem at all.I personally want to check the difference ,closed source or not ,both OS are twins. Now one of them take another direction and why not?.Once before Jolla was financed by the russians may be the closed source was not a problem?Jolla still have some closed source and most devs dont want to listen or do whatever for it!The hardware of C2 its all around JOKE missing and outdated from the factory.(fingerprint?)What if Aurora OS its better optimised for ancient hardware, but there is only one way to check that!
For the same reason as I bought an outdated phone such as C2…curiosity.
No software optimisations (and I highly doubt someone with only intention of laundering state money is capable of optimising anything) are worth it if you voluntarily put yourself under russian surveillance. Aurora is officially backed by FSB, they implemented their certificates into system and did who knows what else.
I have some trust in Jolla as independent Finnish company, especially when they cut their ties with russia. In this context, tinkering with russian software to find something useful is at most foolish or waste of time at the very least
Can you proof all that?Especially the surveillance
Thats very funny to read. I suppose its correct to say i prefer let cia to spy me but fsb.
FSB security certificates are officially added into system, can be easily found on google. Also, I don’t need any proofs of malicious intent for anything russians do, since they bomb my city everyday.
By the way, it’s very naive to think a totalitarian country – at war – will not put any surveillance in state-controlled OS, for state-controlled devices, which are developed primarily for state agencies
Correct. I prefer CIA to spy on me, since they don’t want to kill me
Ya know me too pref if cia spay me in here) anyway im really sorry about what happen to ya and to all of us. For sure there is russian certs but its easy not to use aurora devices for ya. I suppose we are talkin here about coriousity what this decives are and if they are in some way betta origin etc.
The certificate is added in version [3.2.2.21] in 2021 on devices which are not intended to be used outside of companies. We are talking about phones …you about bombs.
Yes, we should, otherwise this becomes just another derailed, completely off-topic discussion thread. Please go elsewhere if you intend to bash others for (often just assumed) different opinions. This also implies to refrain from generalising: It the governments making political decisions, not all citizens of a country! E.g. almost half of the US-Americans did not vote for Trump and there is very little a Russian citizen can do against the war in Ukraine. Consequently such generalisations are always perceived as unjustified, personal attacks by many.
Also Jolla did not break ties with OMP (Open Mobile Russia, the company which develops AuroraOS) out of nobleness, they knew as a EU-based company that this business will become infeasible under the tightening sanctions, because OMP is owned by Rostec, a huge state-owned technology conglomerate which (via other subsidiaries) is also involved in weapons production.
As part of the original question is “Who is using AuroraOS?”:
It is (as already discussed here) primarily intended for governmental entities in Russia for maintaining digital sovereignity, an aspect which is arguably much more important for the FSB than the ministry of agriculture. IMO it is also understandable that Russian governmental entities do not want to rely on certificates issued by western companies: Due to the sanctions they have to, because these western companies are not allowed to renew (prolong the validity period of) extant certificates or issue new ones; also avoiding the possibility of these certificates to become retracted (i.e. invalidated, which would be disruptive for IT-“business continuity” in Russian governmental entities and require issuing own certificates anyway) is logical.
“Curiosity” is a well understandable reason to obtain an AuroraOS device: I was about to do the same a while ago, but ultimately refrained from that, because I deliberately do not want to put any personal efforts into a closed-source software stack (hence I ceased using Windows 20 years ago). There is so much I can do to enhance and propagate Open Source Software, so I rather use my time for that.
Still I am curious what differences a direct comparison reveals: @RaZoR359, please report here when you have tried and analysed an AuroraOS device for a while.
… and the Fplus R570E seem to be the same hardware (likely manufactured in China) as the Ulefone Armor X8, but without the rugged enclosing. It also comes in an Android and AuroraOS variant, the latter is sometimes called Fplus (also often written as F+, and also F-Plus) R570E-Rus. It is listed at aurora.ru
as a supported device and available to end-users in a couple of Russian stores, e.g. at komrunet; but pay attention, the Android variant of the F+ R570E also seems to be sold in Russia.
I wouldnt recommend to buy ayya at komrunet. Fplus at least have more or less support and updates for personal usage. They finally roll out RuStore into it. But updating process is different from familiar scenarios coz they did it via ADM (MDM in SFOS) and not via OTA. Right now RuStore on AuroraOS is funny thing in most due to lotta apps is looks like entry coding skills (women lunar calendar etc). But ya MAY update Ulefone from Android to AuroraOS from existed dumps. Meanwhile Aurora moved to 64 bit code base and this F plus phone seems to be missed it in future.
I don’t get it how backward and bankrupt Russia is moving forward with developing its own mobile OS. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said couple years ago that Russia was stealing washing machines from Ukraine to harvest computer chips. Or how communist China can produce state of the art phones like Red Magic 10?
At the same time EU company Jolla with all the expertise from Nokia is struggling with its own phone C2 that consumers can’t even turn on upon receiving…
Ekaterina Zaharieva, Bulgaria’s EU Commission designate, received the backing from lawmakers to become the bloc’s first ever Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation.
Criticism during the hearing came from lawmakers Filip Turek (Czechia/Patriots for Europe) and Per Clausen (Denmark/GUE-NGL). Turek said she lacked technology expertise, adding: “We don’t need another diplomat.”
How difficult is it for the EU to invest in own Mobile OS aka Sailfish OS? Or in other words is the EU broke?
Aaa loool r ya seriously believe this shit about washin machines? What a crap they feedin they own peoples. Guys cmon really stop with this politics shit.
Yep. You can buy it with overprice. Unfortunately, bootloader is locked, because it’s using TEE environment.
