I was thinkin, we would not have TOH finally.
I want it even more if it is confirmed about TOH!
Especially with possibility to create some DIY module and have some learn+fun ![]()
I never thought the pins wouldn’t be put on the phone after Jolla opened this topic (minimum effort, great benefit to the community), but I saw this more as a test of, whether there was a market for some TOHs that Jolla could design, manufacture, and sell themselves (they probably have some ideas already for something more than just a different color back cover).
Here is my TOH for the XA2 ![]()
The fastest notes app!
Easy to make in a more integrated and easy to use for the J2.
Perhaps with an integrated pen, like in the good old N900?
Well, calling it a “TOH” and an “application” is kinda joke, but at the end, it is still very efficient.
Great news that TOH will be supported and great extension ideas, however do not forget the OS itself that needs attention. In a previous post i wished a TOH that improves the phone IP6x rating, now with the advanced i3c i wish a TOH with an updated browser!
This (in a way) is actually what I still miss from the galaxy note series on every other device I got.
Taking pen out, writing on the off/black screen directly, putting pen back, done.
No unlocking, turning anything on, no manual saving, nothing.
Just writing and everything was saved in notes automatically.
Unimaginably useful and fast for note taking and reminders.
A similar TOH with a basic pen and anything else related with the extra space (a few business cards for example or anything) would be very helpful and interesting, especially with proper software to utilize the main screen instead of adding another one.
Exactly that is possible out of the box with galaxy note 9 at least ![]()
I know, I had that as well. Also possible 3-4 years/devices before that and still possible on all the newer s ultra devices.
Obviously I’m not talking about J2 magically getting a Wacom digitizer and 4000+ pressure points like these devices, or even adding it to the TOH and making it super expensive. But just bare minimum functionality with a TOH would still be amazing for productivity!
You are lucky. There aready is a solution compatible to most electrical and other devices. Fast, versatile. No battery needed. Works out of the box.
Believe it or not, this is big part of the reason I miss that feature.
Tired of filling my desks with post it notes, quickly grabbing small notepads etc. Which is fine for taking the note for the most part, but searching later can be painful ![]()
I probably just missed it, but did we get enough orders in to do this? I’d really like to build something …
Also in the lights on thread Jolla said, there will be TOH availability. and there is one photo of the TOH interface controller.
Thanks! This is so bloody cool. I never got to build something the first time around. This will be fun.
Will they also publish the backcover as STL or STEP file? That would be fantastic even for something as simple as 3D printing some “dumb” custom back covers.
The above is from their announcement in post #1 of this thread, and this was repeated in the Community meeting on the 12th December
16:37:37 <rainemak> #info <Jolla> 3. We’ll open source the hardware and software interface specs
16:37:39 <rainemak> #info <Jolla> of The Other Half so anyone can design, 3D-print, or produce
16:37:41 <rainemak> #info <Jolla> their own modules. So, answer to your question is yes.
16:38:03 <rainemak> I think we'll create a git repository for the 3D models.
Cool. I am not sure if that includes models for the stock back covers but as long as the interface is available it is fine.
It’s git. Anyone can create PR.
I’d like to see a stackable approach and an official TOH Development Kit:
Frames and Other Halves:
- are stackable (in principle)
- pass I3C and power on to the next Other Half
- reuse the normal phone back with its NFC antenna, so NFC remains functional
- can be secured using screws when needed
- have studs to hold the phone battery in place
- have an opening for cameras, wide enough to avoid vignetting with 2x TOH mounted
