thinking things through, maybe you could retask the volume buttons to scroll (eg have a Top Menu toggle for Reader mode)
Lets drop the Android in the other half for those must have apps and the phone itself as a pure sailfishos. ![]()
It looks like I’m in a minority here but I love the wellness idea of linking TOHs to profiles. One for going to work, one for being at home, one for going to bed which stops be doomscrolling Reddit for three hours! I know this could just be done with software but the act of physically changing profiles feels like it would work well for me.
This is probably far to specific, and I don’t know if it would even be possible, but a VHF radio paired with running DireWolf APRS software on the device would be amazing. Failing that a LoRa radio which could connect to something like Meshtastic would be a potential game changer for communication - and doesn’t need a license like the VHF idea!
I would definitely discourage solar pannel. I use a lot of those portable hiking solar pannels and they need to be at least as large as an A3 paper to be efficient.
Furthermore, pannel heats, and always better be far from the connected battery/powerbank for it to not overheat (and get damaged forever, or worst: take fire).
Thermal camera for measurements is also absolutely exciting!
Oh also please make back cover so thick that camera doesn’t stick out, it doesn’t need anything, just plastic so that phone is as thick as camera because just making phone thinner than camera doesn’t mean phone is thinner, its as thick as thickest point so camera.
A micro Mind2 local private IA thing?
That was actually the very first use case for ambiences (the themes), which could also be changed by TOHs, but it never materialised other than changing the visual theme and the sounds. Eventually profiles came, but as different users, not really different ‘modes’ for the same user.
Touchpad for scrolling web pages etc? Not so many fingerprints on the display itself.
How would you do that if camera is on the back? It would be looking upwards and downwards (front cam) while in flight
Battery extention would be tought less usefull than an usual external powerbank that doesnt make the phone itself heavier doesnt it?
an external powerbank is in my eyes subpar, because while you have your phone plugged in, it’s not that great to use. Anyway, we have exchangeable batteries. So we don’t necessarily need a battery extension TOH.
Would love to see a TOH with a laser distance measuring tool (same function as Laser Distance Measure Makita USA - Product Details -LD050P)… But not sure if it is even feasible.
Or maybe a DAB support?
For me an integrated magnet on a wireless OH, would allow you to use a powerbank on the go if necessary eg Anker MagGo Power Bank (10K) - Anker US
Super cool!
And while I dislike adding Software/OS things to hardware thread, with the mention of a Keyboard Other Half possibility I have to remind/make you (@Jolla @rainemak) aware that
Hardware Keyboard support in the core OS is severely lacking and needs a workover!
As we have seen with the Gemini port, but also others like PineTab:
- Key(board)-based navigation in the UI is almost non-existant. Hotkey/Shortcut support missing.
- the VKB must be made available/toggleable also when a hardware kbd is detected. The Gemini did not have this, it was considered not needed but it made using the Gemini almost impossible because:
- No Clipboard access! No copy paste (except within the Browser). This makes very, very tedious to enter e.g. passwords anywhere…
- No Multilanguage/keyboard layout switching
- No special character entry except those present on the keyboard (again: passwords!).
- Therefore no emoji input possible, except for those how remember hex-codes for unicode code points, and have an Alt-key and a Numpad that are recognized.
- No predictive text - it’s not there anyway nowadays, but in theory it is a feature that if available, should be usable.
This may seem minor, but keyboards are not only about Text Input.
You need Lipstick support (navigation), Silica Support (shortcuts, navigation), and especially things like the Clipboard working as expected. If this is not improved you may just as well have no HW keyboard support a all.
I’m serious. Try it. Take a Gemini and try creating an Email account with it, or logging into a website, while using non-trivial passwords. Try writing a Finnish message while the device has an English keyboard. Try sending an URL copied from the browser via Email. Have fun.
SFOS can do all that easily. SFOS on Gemini is crippled.
FM/DAB transmitter, so I could feed our kitchen radio/car audio. ![]()
But I also like the ideas mentioned here, such as Qi charging and IR remote.
My co-workers, when they can’t wait to feed their 3D-printers with TOH-printable for me:
