My 2p as an English native, marketeer and author. Jolly Boys is bad for all the reasons stated. It’s also linked to the Proud Boys. It’s not terrible though and Jolla was pretty poor for an international market.
I dare say the community could come up with a better name, for free.
Presumably they will continue doing business as “Jolla” - does it then really matter what the company is called?
When the name is the face of the company, then yes it does matter - especially when you’re looking to raise capital or attract investors, or target a wide multi-cultural market. Much better to have chosen something completely bland and innocuous (e.g. ‘Alphabet’ … Oh no, wait, that’s already taken, erm … ‘Numerical’) as the company name and then trade to the public using ‘Sailfish’).
I suspect ‘Jolla’ is probably trademarked, and that that trademark is owned by Jolla Oy. In this case they won’t be able to use it - that is unless its part of the asset transfer agreed by the courts.
I recall that Jolla positively confirmed that hey were contemplating selling App Support separately. But there are obstacles, including IIRC problems that could be caused by different HW platforms. I guess expectations my be disappointed in some cases. I will try to finding the source for my vague assertion.
Not sure they’ve updated the website yet. On the Sailfish page it still talks about it as being managed and developed by a Finnish company, Jolla Ltd (Oy), which is obviously no longer the case following the announced restructuring. I think it will be ‘Watch this space’ to see what will happen.
Something I must have missed through the years… 20 people is keeping Sailfish afloat? 20??? Dear lord! I figured 200, at least.
I am grateful that Sailfish lives to fight another day, and I shall have to become far more patient knowing 20 people are all that’s making this dream come true. And there has to be more than programmers, right? Or else programmers are doing additional duties like office cleaning, answering phones, payables, receivables, planning holiday parties.
Wow. I can only imagine how long, protracted negotiations must have weighed upon a tightly knit community who probably were bound by courts not to say a word. By now they must have thick skin or truly be driven by the vision to prevail and bring the world an alternative that admittedly most the world doesn’t know it needs!

Indeed, an ill advised choice of name on so many levels. They need to rename the company as soon as they can I think.
How much is the registration fee for a name change? The ‘Jollaboys’ should do this.
edit: Suggestion: something computer related and/or that a customer can recognize as the good old Jolla restructured: Jollasystems, JollaOS, Jollatech, NewJolla, JollaRecreation, JoPho (Jolla phone), JoFo, or at best some finnish marine related term after Jolla.
And correct me if I’m wrong, but I think many were working part time.
Anyway, why everyone cares about a sub company’s name so much?
They could name the sub company “asdf123” and I wouldn’t care at all.
The point is that Jolla and sailfish are still alive and going strong!

Maybe some language-sensitive people are taking the “Jollyboys” situation badly because up to now, just like with the elegant UI design, there was an elegant, thoughtful approach to naming elements.
The Finnish names of the OS versions often involved bodies of water or geographical places with lots of lakes or rivers, the nautical theme of sailors, ahoy and harbour resulted in third-party app names like “Tidings” for an RSS reader or “Cargo Dock” for a File Browser - it all fits together quite beautifully, just like the UI.
On the one hand, the people who fought for Jolla to survive and put their time and money into “Jollyboys” should absolutely be the ones to name it as they please, even if it breaks this language system.
That being said, I flinched seeing the “(c) Jollyboys” on the Jolla website.
I want Jolla to be taken seriously as a business partner and not sound like a dubious dating app, a throwaway email address or an incel subreddit.
Maybe it’s not that important and only a few suffer reading this. Maybe it’s a temporary solution.
But there are so many nautical, beautiful Finnish words - I checked.
“Harbour” in Finnish? “Satama”.
I’ve written about this before a couple of times, to much disbelief. They had the same #, pre- Rostelcom, when they were apparently much much closer to going under. And yes, I got the impression that almost all were super part-time though maybe some were still working in their free time.
And yet, even then, we got a fair amount of development.
It’s a shame they never had a documentary team covering them. It’s quite a story now and would be great publicity.
Not so bad for an hopeless business, on the other side.
I have the sensation that the initial name was “JollaBoys” as everyone would expected reading. For example, I read the “JollaBoys” until someone pointed out that was “Jolly” and not “Jolla”. I am guessing that this bias in reading would have affected almost many those are recognizing “Jolla” as a proper name. Unfortunately, “Jolla” is not a widespread well-known proper name, therefore everyone else accustomed with English would correct “Jolla” in “Jolly”.
My educated guess is that someone or something made a name change (typo) in the registration process and that “decision” by chance has been accepted instead of being corrected.
At least an opportunity to raise some money… 
It is enough 20. Skilled, horizontally organised and well managed. Probably mostly moved in automotive SeaFarix business and about 5 shared with JollyBoys. The numbers on the payrolls, I mean.

I am amazed. You’re right - a documentary would be incredible. I wonder if they have photos from the era. Someone could interview employees past and present.
I think through the years of reading through this forum (and TMO) and now recall the spectrum of input this part-time band of 20 people have received from the community. It’s great that the community is passionate about this product. But I imagine a large lecture hall with these 20 people up on stage and the entirety of the Sailfish user base in the seats. I imagine all of the comments being said to these 20 people for all of these years, then silence. Then ask each of the 20 to share their story. They worked on this part-time?!?!?! I assume that the vast majority had to have other jobs from which they drew their living wage.
Last week I watched a movie I had never previously heard of named “Sisu”. A bit gruesome and simplistic in plot. But given the protagonist and setting are Finnish, and given the meaning of the word, I immediately thought of the Jolla team and associated this word with them…and that was before I knew they consist of 20 people who are quite possibly having to work other jobs to make ends meet!
Wow. Just wow. I appreciate my phone, however imperfect and unfinished it may be, all the more. I’m pretty sure if we were in my imaginary lecture hall, after that 20th person shared their story, we’d be silent then stand and give them an ovation for making it this far. Hats off to that team!
