Potential Bluetooth Support in the Android App Support (AAS)

this is kinda … a store in a store …

And Android AppSupport is an OS in an OS

Yes. It gets the apps from Google’s Play Store using anonymous accounts. So apps installed from there are as trustworthy as apps obtained from Play Store (because they are the same apps).

For some obscure reason I’ve been able to switch on AAS bluetooth and connect to my Garmin Forerunner 55 only once.

Repeating the stop / start procedure a second time makes the device not anymore visible despite the fact that the 10-hybris.conf is still correct.

What is the correct procedure to start AAS bluetooth starting from the second time you use it?

I need to restart the watch each time for it to be seen in AAS.

Any idea yet of the timeline for AAS Bluetooth support…?

I see some promising part of that needing translations for 5.1  : appsupport-bridge-bt | Projects | Sailfish OS Localisation

I’ve had a similar issue with an Android app requiring bluetooth. Here is what has been working for me:

  • Turn on AAS Bluetooth
  • Open Android settings and scan for new devices. Ensure the device I am trying to connect to shows up in the scan
  • Open app used to connect to device
  • Celebrate success!

I find if I don’t complete a bluetooth scan for new devices in the Android settings, and instead just go to open the app I want to use, it complains that Bluetooth is not working/enabled.

Hopefully this helps!

This should be finally addressed by Jolla, with the new hardware. I’d like it to work with say smart glasses etc.

This has nothing do to with hardware, its a software thing. We will most likely get it with version 5.1 this year.

I am a Jolla/ Sailfish user from the early days and I really enjoyed using the system for many many years.

But the issue with the lack of proper BT support for the Android apps became back around 2017 for me a KO criteria. This and the aging phone pushed me finally into the Android ecosystem.

I was tempted to buy the new Jolla phone but it stopped me as soon as I remembered the BT issue.

As soon as Jolla/ Dalvik supports BT for Android I will put the money on the table for the new Jolla Phone - doesn’t matter the HW specs AS long as things running smooth, the battery life is 1 day and the camera is ok-ish.

Jolla has announced that they will publish the Bluetooth module through Jolla store. Shouldn’t be that long anymore before it is available for everyone

i did notice that but it’s just that the bluetooth just keeps turning off;

but then i turn off android, do the procedure to move bluetooth to android again and then go do the aas bluetooth settings to scan it and if i see the device, then it will work. this works about 1/5; if this doesn’t work, i reboot and retry the whole procedure again.

the other day, the last person at the office didn’t have their smartphone with them, and so i had to lock up using bluetooth, it took me 2 tries, but i got it working, but it does turn a half a minute thing into 10min work… and it’s not guaranteed to work, so i don’t know what i would have done, i can’t not lock up the office…

Not sure if it matters, but I typically have Bluetooth turned off on my phone before running the ON script.

Could also be hardware related. I know the Bluetooth on my Sony Xperia XA2 had a lot of issues connecting properly to devices, even ones I had connected to hundreds of times before. It was very frustrating!

Instead of rebooting the phone, have you tried restarting the Bluetooth subsystem through the Settings →Utilities menu? That is also an option.

i have a C2, i keep bluetooth off mostly, i turn it on before i start AAS; maybe i’ll try to leave it off and start AAS and the app first.

I guess i can try the restarting bluetooth othr way, if it happens again; but hopefully not.

I’m irrationally pleased that I was able to pick up a package using bluetooth and an Android app at an automatic pickup point in Sweden with this technique on my Xperia 10ii on 5.0.0.77. Many thanks for this.

The same applies to me.

Sorry for being so late to the party, but that’s a very nice trick here!
(and handy until we get proper support from Jolla).
