Ordered a new Jolla Phone and getting started away from Big Tech

As others have said, with SailfishOS I am mostly looking the long game. With android forks there is always the chance that google stops handling them in open matter.

SailfishOS offers fully independent OS from Europe. And for me personally European tech independence has grown to be important topic. In my head android forks aren’t that in the long run. For disclaimer I haven’t been able to daily drive SailfishOS yet, but I intent to do that with J2.

Ollee watch is awesome, I had it for a few months now in an F-91W case and loving it. It can be used w/o the app, but the experience won’t be the same, and also, you won’t be avle to install the fw updates on the watch unless you keep aroind a phone with the Ollee companion app.

Keeping the N9/meego spark and dream alive.
Hoping to see a real polished alternative to the duopoly, fully functional, blazing fast, and pretty inside-out.
That’s it for me.

Not sure if this would be of interest. Tuta mail Germany, I’ve just started an account with them. Syncs email, calendar and contacts across multi platforms. Single user with unlimited devices 3 euros a month, free version also.

Below is the Linux info

Linux

Due to the many distributions of Linux, we have to restrict support to a few widely used ones: The official Linux AppImage and the Flatpak support the last two Ubuntu LTS releases. In August 2025 these are 24.04.3 LTS and 22.04.5 LTS. They also support the last two Fedora Linux releases, which currently means Fedora 41 and Fedora 42. Tuta clients that have been packaged for other distributions or by third parties do not receive official support.

Tuta mail needs special software exactly like proton, would be complicated with SFOS I think. But maybe the Android app could work somehow.

Hello there,

I am new here, in fact my first post is this one, I have also ordered an Jolla Phone and hope to support these guys who are amaizing in my opinion. I loved NOKIA and would do my best to support the real guys who did wonders to get back in front and start having a place at the big table. I really wish this to be a succes and get bigger… Great to meet everyone here !

That’s what I’m hoping for. I also run my own domain so my have other options, once I get my head and hands around the new phone and SFOS

Re: Tuta:
Demonia has it right, the appification is not good.
Tuta mail offers nothing standard email with proper PGP/GPG set-up doesn’t offer, at least at its core. But I’m sure that - due to their commercial nature - they portray themselves differently.

I must’ve missed this post back then, because that’s exactly what I’m doing.

Mail is obvious thanks to IMAP and shouldn’t require explanation. Personally I do not self-host it. I used to pay €1/mo. to posteo.de, but now I joined an association that includes mail.

The rest requires a central server (or cloud storage) that both devices can sync from.
If you have a static IP you can run one yourself (I used to). I heard there’s possibilities even if you don’t have one, but I never messed around with that and got myself a VPS instead. just a few €/mo.
Sometimes you can also get shared hosting for free, e.g. my country has an internet user association (kapsi jeee!).
On a server, it comes down to a CalDAV/CardDAV server and accessible (via ssh/sftp) storage.
If you’re interested I can explain how I sync keepass databases on both devices.

tl;dr: For under €10 per month you can leave your depenencies on big tech behind and gain a whole bunch of freedom.
