My first impression of the Jolla Phone appearance models

Hello Cybette, thank you for your lovely post about your first encounter with the Jolla 2. I remember you were connected to Jolla in the beginning. Yes, Jolla made a good decision by using the design of the J1 again. Surely worries about the size will fade away as soon as we can hold it in our hands.

My female hands used and still use the XA2 plus with pleasure.

You probably carry a purse around which is something i don’t do.

So apart from the hand issue there is a “storage issue”. I want phones to be able to fit in a normal pant pocket easily.

I am not a gen-z kid to wear xxxxxl pants, nor a skater kid in the 90s, and for sure i wouldn’t carry a man purse around.

Just to check that you are man and “normal size”? Just wondering as nobody needs xxxxxl pants to fit modern day phone in to their pockets…. I understand your concern if you happen to be female as their jeans for example rarely have good front pockets. Off topic, but I have feeling that this is just complaining out of joy of complaining…. Nothing wrong with expressing personal preferences and you can like what ever you want. But I don’t buy the “storage issue” one bit as real problem for average user

Well i kind of wear tailored/slim fit clothes. A big phone in a front or back pocket is annoying.

I didn’t mean to say that it might not be annoying for you. I just think that isn’t problem for vast majority of people

Many things are not a problem (from crap food to oppressive governments) for the majority of people but that doesn’t mean i’ll look away.

And you shouldn’t, but please be clear that these things are personal problems for you. Not for majority. Jolla is trying to please here as many as possible, but not all personal preferences are possible with this one. If majority is happy, I see it as a win for Jolla

Basically jolla tries to do the best they can with whats available and with the less amount of money spent. Which is fine and i get the limitations of it.

At least i hope that once this kicks off i’ll see something more fitting to the sfos paradigm.

What gave that away? And yes! I have been eyeing the lavendar Framework 12 :purple_heart: The last time I met the framework folks (Open Source Summit EU iirc) I asked them about a Framework phone. They have definitely thought about it (probably more than just think about it), but of course bringing it to fruition is another story. In the meantime, what Fairphone and Jolla are doing are steps in the right direction, although both are only available in the European region.

I’m fortunate to have 2 laptops provided by my company, but my next personal laptop (when I need one) will be a Framework!

So you’ve not just heard of them but met them too. Amazing. They did say in some community AMA that it’d not be something to jump into half-heartedly, but didn’t say they wouldn’t do it. Very contested space that, but if Fairphone can do it, I’m sure they would succeed in it too.

As for the Framework laptops, the 12 inch hasn’t gotten very glowing reviews, so I’d probably get the 13 inch one. Both the 12 and 16 inch ones have a bit of deck and display flex which is a bit yikes. 13 seems like the best in-between.

German company Schenker is planning to launch a modular laptop too.

Thanks for posting the pics!

I can clearly see that the J2 phablet is so big, its impossible for the girl to hold it with one hand. It’d be the same for a man unless for the snowman :skier:

But will there ever be any device that fits well in slim fit clothes?
I’m a dude so I don’t know how it is to carry stuff in slim fit jeans and yoga pants.

I’m very much a “dude” (although I do prefer slim-fit jeans), and started carrying a handbag/purse years ago so that I wouldn’t have to worry about phones and keys ripping holes in my jeans pockets.

The C2 is slightly too large to use one-handed, looking forward to a slightly smaller J2.

It is extremely rare that I carry stuff in my pockets as well.
I have a car, jacket, bag when I ride, so I genuinely can’t relate with pocket problems.

We were talking about storage issue without manpurse so basically pants pocket. With normal size i meant that if person is about average size = about average size pants and pockets

Back in 2013 i was making the same arguments about phone sizes and small trousers pockets, still today the first test is to put the phone in my pocket lol
BUT there ia a big but, we are in 2026 now, different use patterns and work with phone s and most importantly my eyes are not getting better ;-(
I also found out the way i handle phones with larger screen size is very different, eg holding a booklet. i have clumsy fingers and, i can do simple screen scrolling but anything else is too complicated to handle so i use both hands simply as that. Maybe i am adapting too easily, i like the size of 10iii

The Jolla phone is going to fit everyone’s hands / pockets / bags differently. Even if you have a similar sized hand as me, J2 can still feel different in your hand. My chubby hand provides a nice cushioning effect, which may be absent in thinner hands/fingers. I took photos with my hands handling the phones naturally, I wasn’t posing the devices to make it fit etc. Look at not just the reach of my thumb but also the fingers behind the device. Being able to cover the whole device across the back improves the balances a whole lot. I was able to turn the J2 around easily with one hand while playing around with it, while I dropped the C2 twice in the photo process. :face_with_hand_over_mouth: Hopefully the images can give you an idea of the relative difference you can expect, if you have one of the other devices to compare with.

In cooler weather (which is common in Finland) I put phones in my jacket pockets (which are generally big enough). Occasionally I’ll have it in the back pocket of my jeans, like earlier this evening at orchestra rehearsal. I think the J2 will stick out a bit (height), but the width and thickness will be just fine. I also have phones in my hoodie/jacket pockets more than bags/purses.

Well it was not a formal meeting or anything, I just went to their booth at the conference (they were demoing a device with RISC-V mainboard, which I’d also like to try someday, although that means I should get the 13 instead of the 12) and had a quick chat. It was a busy booth so I didn’t take too much of their time. I did get the impression they are not going to branch from laptops anytime soon, but one can hope

For a moment I was thinking, the logistics/delivery company? TIL about Schenker Technologies, thanks for the tip!
